The Tahiti Pro is disappointing for Kanoa Igarashi and Ethan Ewing
Two surfers arrived at Teahupoo within the WSL Finals qualifying zone, but ended up out of the running for the world title.
The 2025 Tahiti Pro is a runaway success for Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi and Australian surfer Ethan Ewing.
Contrary to their expectations, the barrels at Teahupoo spelled the end of the 2025 CT for these two renowned surfers.
Both arrived in French Polynesia within the top 5 of the rankings, the qualifying zone for the WSL Finals. However, they ultimately missed out on a spot in the Cloudbreak event, which will soon crown the new world surfing champion.
Kanoa, 27, started the decisive Tahiti Pro in a comfortable position. He was ranked third in the world.
However, his early elimination in the repechage – surprised by wildcard Mihimana Braye – left Igarashi dependent on the results of his opponents. His premature exit came at the worst possible time.
As the championship progressed, this defeat proved fatal. The final tally dictated a drop to seventh place in the rankings, preventing the Asian surfer from making a second appearance at the WSL Finals.
After two campaigns below the top 10, the Tokyo 2020 silver medalist emerged reinvigorated this year, consistently finding his best results.
A regular in the later stages of the competition, the Japanese surfer reached two finals (Bells Beach and Trestles), which he ultimately lost.
Ethan Ewing, meanwhile, began his performance in the waters of the Pacific Ocean ranked fifth, the final position that guaranteed passage to the Fiji archipelago.
In the quarterfinal duel with American Griffin Colapinto, the former world runner-up held the upper hand. Whoever won would automatically qualify for the WSL Finals.
Ethan was defeated in this match and no longer had to rely on himself. The final blow came with a heroic victory by compatriot Jack Robinson, who dropped Ewing to sixth place in the standings. It was the end of a season in which the elegant 26-year-old surfer had been quite consistent—he had several appearances in the quarterfinals and semifinals—but was set up in the final stretch.
On the women's side, Australian Isabella Nichols also experienced the same situation as Ethan Ewing and Kanoa Igarashi. In this case, with the added bonus that Bella had even won a stop (in El Salvador) during the regular season.
"It hurts to miss the top 5 by just a few points, but I know it will make me even more eager to train hard and improve my surfing during the off-season," said the former Rookie of the Year winner.
