How to Make Obsidian in Minecraft?
Obsidian is among the most adaptable blocks in Minecraft, serving as a crucial element for advancing through the game. It is ideal for reinforcing buildings, crafting enchantment tables, constructing Nether portals, and much more. Overall, it is an essential block to possess, and this guide will offer detailed instructions on how to create obsidian in Minecraft.

What to do to Make Obsidian
Step 1: Constructing a Bucket
The initial step in creating obsidian involves gathering the necessary resources to craft a bucket:
1 Bucket (requires 3 iron ingots)
Buckets are essential for collecting water. To make a bucket, you'll need three iron ingots, which can be acquired by mining iron ore found underground. After collecting the ore, smelt it in a furnace to convert it into iron ingots. Finally, arrange the ingots on a crafting table in the following pattern:
Step 2: Locating a Water Source and Gathering the Water from It
Water can be located in oceans, swamps, lakes, or any other areas that contain water. To collect water, approach the water source, hold out your bucket, and right-click on the water. You should now have a bucket filled with water.
Step 3: Locating a Lava Source
Lava sources are primarily located in underground caves as lava pools. While you may occasionally encounter lava above ground, it is generally more challenging to find. For a better chance of discovering lava sources, venture underground! You can collect lava using buckets by right-clicking on the lava sources.
Step 4: Spill the water onto the lava.
Once you've located a lava source, pour the water from your bucket onto stationary lava source blocks. It's important to remember that only stationary lava will transform into obsidian.
Before pouring water, ensure that the lava you intend to convert into obsidian is not flowing lava. If it is a flowing source block, it will turn into cobblestone instead. Below are images illustrating the difference between stationary and flowing lava:
The key difference is that stationary lava (pictured on the left) occupies a full block, whereas flowing lava (pictured on the right) does not.
Step 5: Extracting the Obsidian
To mine obsidian, you will need at least a diamond pickaxe or a netherite pickaxe. Using any other type of pickaxe will result in the obsidian block being destroyed instead of mined. Obsidian is very durable, so mining it takes a considerable amount of time. To speed up the process, you can apply Efficiency enchantments to your pickaxe.
Different Lava - providing Sources
Although the underground is rich in lava pools and lava sources, it may not be the most efficient place when it comes to gathering lava. When you want to obtain lava buckets, there are several alternative options.
1.That mysterious realm known as the Nether
The Nether is home to an abundant supply of lava sources, featuring numerous lava pools and lakes, making it the ideal location for farming lava. The most challenging aspect of reaching the Nether is that you must first create a Nether portal, which requires obsidian to construct. However, if you're looking to obtain lava buckets more efficiently, collecting ten obsidian blocks to build a Nether portal will grant you access to an infinite lava source. Keep in mind that you cannot create obsidian directly in the Nether, as water evaporates instantly when placed there.
2.Dripstone
If you prefer not to travel through the Nether each time you need lava, you can create an automatic lava farm using dripstone. The materials needed to set up an infinite lava farm are:
1 Cauldron (requires 7 iron ingots)
1 Lava Bucket
1 Pointed Dripstone
1 Dripstone Block
To craft a cauldron, you'll need seven iron ingots. Once you have collected the seven ingots, arrange them on the crafting table in the following pattern
Dripstone blocks and pointed dripstone can be found in Dripstone Caves, which can generate at any altitude. To obtain these items, you will need to explore underground caves or Dripstone Caves specifically. Alternatively, if you prefer not to search for dripstone, you can trade with a Journeyman-level stone mason villager.
Once you have gathered all the necessary materials, you can construct an infinite and automatic lava farm. Here are the steps to create a simple mechanism:
Step 1:Position the cauldron at the specific location where you intend to gather the lava.
Step 2:Position the dripstone block at least two blocks above the cauldron.
Next, place the pointed dripstone on top of the dripstone block, ensuring that the pointed end is directed downward toward the cauldron.
Step 3:Add a few blocks above the dripstone block to form a space that will hold the lava.
Next, position the lava between these blocks.
Congratulations, you have now completed your infinite and automatic lava farm! The pointed dripstone will gradually drip lava droplets into the cauldron below. Once the cauldron is full of lava, you can collect it with a bucket.
