How to Remove Facebook Reels from Your Newsfeed?

Meta (the company previously known as Facebook) launched Facebook Reels to U.S. users and made it available to all global users earlier this year. This means you’ve likely started noticing more Facebook Reels in your Facebook Feed, Stories, and Watch tab. With the rise of TikTok and Instagram Reels, this new feature aims to help Facebook users discover similar short-form content within the Facebook app. However, if you’re not a fan of Facebook Reels, it can be annoying to suddenly have them dominate your newsfeed. So, is there a way to turn off Facebook Reels or remove them from your feed?Unfortunately, as of the time of writing, the answer is “not really”—at least not for mobile app users. That said, there are still steps you can take to reduce the distraction of Facebook Reels and improve your browsing experience!

Use a Web Browser to Stop Seeing Facebook Reels

In the Facebook app, recommended content—including Reels—is automatically pushed to your newsfeed. If you want your Facebook experience to focus on updates and photos from friends and family, we recommend using Facebook on desktop or via mobile browsers like Safari or Chrome instead.

Of course, Facebook Reels are still accessible from your browser. They just won’t appear mixed in with posts from friends and pages you follow. You can still watch Reels in the Watch tab, and you’ll see some recommended Reels in a scrollable carousel format in your feed, like this:

Note: Using the mobile web version of Facebook you will lose some of the functionality of the app. That's true of most websites with mobile apps, because of course they want you to download the app. But if there's some feature in the app that you're not a fan of, like Facebook Reels or Twitter Spaces, the trade off of a slightly less optimized experience may be worth it for you.

How to Hide Facebook Reels from Your Feed

Another method to remove Facebook Reels from your newsfeed—or at least reduce their visibility—is by telling Facebook your preferences. This doesn’t mean tweeting at Facebook or contacting customer support. Instead, there’s an in-app feature to report content you don’t want to see.

When a Reel appears in your newsfeed—whether it’s the carousel preview mentioned earlier or a single video—use the Hide function. Here’s how:

Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the Reel or its preview.

Select Hide (labeled as "See fewer posts like this" in some cases).

This signals to Facebook’s algorithm that you’re less interested in such content, helping reduce its frequency in your feed over time.

Hiding Facebook Reels serves two purposes:

It immediately removes that specific post from your Feed, so you won’t see it again.

It signals to Facebook’s algorithm to avoid showing you similar content in the future.

Of course, this doesn’t guarantee you’ll never see Facebook Reels again—like all social media platforms, Facebook pushes users to adopt new formats and prioritizes them in its algorithm. However, using this feature should reduce the frequency of Reels in your feed over time.

Pro tip: The "Hide" feature is available for all Facebook posts. If you’re not interested in the type of content being recommended, use this tool to tell Facebook and help tailor your newsfeed more closely to your interests.

How to Turn Off Autoplay for Facebook Reels

This tip won’t eliminate Facebook Reels from your feed, but it will make them far less distracting! By default, the Facebook app is set to autoplay all videos in your newsfeed. We’ve all experienced it—trying to browse subtly, only to be startled by a video blasting audio at full volume.

Thankfully, there’s a solution.

To disable autoplay for Facebook Reels:

Go to the Menu tab (the hamburger icon) in the app. This will take you to your profile settings and preferences.

Tap the settings gear icon in the upper right corner to access your account settings.

Scroll down to the "Media" button under Preferences. From here, check the bubble next to "Never Autoplay Videos" and make sure "Videos Start with Sound" is toggled off.

And that’s all! With these settings enabled, Facebook Reels will no longer autoplay as you scroll through your newsfeed. This should reduce their distraction and hopefully make your stealth browsing more seamless.

Whether you find Reels distracting, are tired of seeing three-month-old reposted TikToks, or simply prefer to consume short-form vertical videos elsewhere, using any or all of these tips can help keep your newsfeed largely free of Facebook Reels.
