How to Disable Steam Cloud Sync Settings
There isn't a straightforward, one-click option to remove cloud saves on Steam. Instead, you'll need to follow a workaround that involves disabling the sync settings, replacing the files, and finalizing the changes at the end. These steps are applicable for Steam users on both PC and Mac. To begin, you'll need to disable your cloud sync settings for Steam. This includes turning off synchronization for Steam as a whole, as well as the specific sync settings for each individual game.
1.Open the Steam client on your PC or Mac and log in.
2.Then, select "Steam" from the top menu and choose "Preferences" or "Settings," depending on your operating system.
Click on "Cloud" in the left sidebar of the Settings or Preferences menu.
On the right side, uncheck the box that says "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications that support it."
Finally, click "OK" to save your changes.
Next, click on the "Library" tab.
Right-click your game and select Properties.
In the pop-up settings menu, uncheck the "Keep game saves" option, but only if this option is available.
Exit the menu and restart Steam to ensure that the changes are applied.
How to Delete Local Game Save Files
At this point, your Steam client should no longer be synchronizing game save files with its cloud servers. This allows you to delete or move the existing save files and create new blank alternatives that can be synced instead. You will need to find the local game save files on your PC, and their location will depend on your operating system. By default, you should be able to locate these files in the following directories:
Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
Linux: ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
From there, locate the relevant files for your game. You will need to identify the correct folder by matching it to the game's Steam ID value. To delete the local game save files, remove the entire folder that corresponds to your game's Steam ID. For example, for the game Europa Universalis IV, you would delete the folder located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\236850.If you wish to back up your saved files first, make a copy of this folder to another location before deleting it.
Re-enable Steam Cloud Sync Settings.
There should now be a difference between your local save game files and the game save files that Steam has stored on your PC or Mac. Your next step is to re-enable your Steam Cloud sync settings.
1.Open the Steam client and log in.
2.From the top menu, select "Steam" and then "Preferences" or "Settings," depending on your operating system.
In the Settings or Preferences menu, click on "Cloud" in the left sidebar, and then check the box that says "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications that support it" on the right.
Click "OK" to save the changes.
Next, click on the "Library" tab and right-click on your game.
From the pop-up menu, select "Properties."
In the pop-up settings box, enable the Keep game saves checkbox.
Exit the menu and restart Steam to apply the changes.
