Guaguas Municipales Breaks Passenger Figures Again in 2025 and Strengthens its Sustainable Mobility Model
The board of directors of Guaguas Municipales unanimously approved the closing of the 2025 fiscal year this Monday. The sustained increase in demand—with more than 1.7 million additional passengers compared to the previous year—driven in part by the free travel pass policy for residents, along with the support of public administrations, especially the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, consolidates a solid financial foundation to continue advancing the city's sustainable mobility model.
During 2025, the company registered 56,589,875 passengers, representing an increase of 1,757,370 customers compared to 2024 (54,832,505), equivalent to a growth of 3.20%. This growth consolidates the upward trend that began in 2022, with a cumulative increase of 60.65% over the last three years, representing more than 21 million additional passengers during the period of free travel.
The president of the municipal transport company and Councilor for Mobility, José Eduardo Ramírez, emphasized that “the growth in demand has required a significant reinforcement of resources, both human and material.” In this regard, the average number of drivers increased from 605 in 2024 to 655 in 2025, while progress was made in fleet renewal with the addition of 26 new vehicles of various types.
For his part, the general manager, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, highlighted the efficient management of resources in a context marked by uncertainty. The company closed the fiscal year with expenses of €73.06 million and revenues of €79.33 million, allowing it to maintain a sound financial position to undertake previously committed investments in fleet renewal, infrastructure—such as the development of the Spine project—, staff recruitment, and network improvements.
Strengthened Financial Structure
The financial results, driven by the City Council's investment efforts and financing linked to the European Next Generation funds, have contributed to strengthening the company's financial structure. In this regard, equity increased by more than €6.2 million, reaching €36.1 million, while net worth increased by more than €9 million, reaching €58.7 million.
For the third consecutive year, the annual report reflects the impact of the international context, especially regarding supply chain delays—with a direct impact on vehicle deliveries—as well as the evolution of energy costs.
In operational terms, the management report details the addition of 26 new buses during the year: six 18-meter articulated buses, ten 9.5-meter electric buses, and ten 12-meter buses. These acquisitions are aimed at maintaining a balanced average fleet age and improving the service's energy efficiency.
Likewise, through European programs such as INNOBUS-TUR, the company has continued to enhance the customer experience and operational capacity by implementing onboard information screens, video surveillance systems, and new data collection and analysis tools designed to progressively optimize its service offerings.
Commitment to the EIB
In financial terms, and in relation to the MetroGuagua project, the company continues to meet its commitments to the European Investment Bank (EIB) under the loan agreement signed in 2017, having achieved all the solvency ratios required by the institution by 2025.
Regarding the development of the MetroGuagua, the management report indicates that, given the accumulated delays in the execution of the works, the company has opted to implement progressive improvements to the network of lines. This approach allows for the gradual transfer of benefits to users, without having to wait for the complete finishing of this strategic sustainable mobility project, which remains vital for the future of the municipal company.
