The Let Them Theory Summary | Mel Robbins

A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can’t Stop Talking About by Mel Robbin

Introduction

What if one simple mindset shift could free you from the judgments of others? In The Let Them Theory, the key idea is simple: let people think what they want about you. They will, anyway. How much energy do you waste worrying about what others think? Do you hold back from speaking up or going after what you want because you fear what people might say? If you’re like most of us, you do this way too much. This fear holds us back. It keeps us quiet and stuck in trying to please everyone. It stops us from living our true lives and going after our dreams.

Mel Robbins talks about her own battles with trying to please others. She found that when she stopped trying to control what others thought, her life changed. She took back her personal power. Through relatable stories and practical advice, she shows how to use this life-changing approach in daily life—at work, with family, and online. This theory isn’t about being mean or cold to others. It’s about knowing the difference between helpful advice and opinions that just hold you back. It’s about using your energy for what matters: living by your values and following your own path.

StoryShot #1: Let People Think Whatever They Want About You—They Will Anyway

Do you ever stay up at night thinking about a talk you had and worry about how you came across? Or spend way too long making the “perfect” post online, then wait anxiously to see if people will like it?

Mel Robbins’ main idea is simple: people will form their views about you no matter what. This is just how humans work. Trying to control these views is both pointless and tiring. Our brains are made to judge things. It’s how we understand the world. When someone forms a view about you, it shows their own life, values, and biases more than who you truly are. Two people can watch you do the same thing and walk away with totally different ideas about you. Think of it like this: You might leave a meeting thinking you did great, while one coworker thinks you’re smart, and another thinks you’re too pushy. Who’s right? They all are—they just see things through their own lens.

The freeing truth is that you can’t control this. No amount of trying to please people, explaining yourself, or being perfect will lock in how others see you. Once you accept this, you can stop wasting energy on something you can’t change. This doesn’t mean being rude. It means knowing that while you can control what you do and why, you can’t control how others take it.

The Let Them Theory Formula

The Let Them Theory goes beyond just letting go of others’ opinions. This powerful approach has two key parts:

“Let Them” – Release your need to control how others see you

“Let Me” – Take full ownership of your actions and responses

Together, these create a framework that transforms relationships and helps you live more authentically.

From External Focus to Internal Control

When you practice “Let Them,” you gain emotional distance from difficult situations. This prevents others’ behaviors from controlling how you feel.

This creates space for the “Let Me” part, where you take back control of your reactions and consciously choose your own path forward. This shift in thinking reduces daily stress and builds better ways to handle social situations.

Creating Balanced Relationships Through Dual Focus

The Let Them Theory isn’t about becoming detached or indifferent. Instead, it helps create healthy balance.

By allowing others to be themselves while taking responsibility for your own journey, you build respectful relationships where everyone can express themselves freely. This balanced approach creates deeper connections and gives everyone room to reach their full potential without constantly seeking approval.

Try This: Next time you worry about someone’s opinion, tell yourself: “Let them think what they think.” See how this helps you focus back on what you can control—your own choices and actions.

StoryShot #2: Know the Difference Between Helpful Feedback and Harmful Opinions

Have you ever taken advice that felt wrong just to please someone? Or did you ignore good tips because they hurt your pride? To use the Let Them Theory well, you must learn which advice is worth your time.

The big difference between helpful feedback and random opinions appears in key areas of your life. Feedback helps you grow. It’s clear, useful tips from people who know what they’re talking about and want you to do well. Opinions are just personal views that often say more about the person talking than about you. For example, if a trusted workmate says your talks would be better with more facts, that’s worth considering. But if someone says you’re “too ambitious” or your goals are “not realistic,” that’s likely just their own fears talking. Don’t let these opinions stop you from taking creative risks in your work or personal life.

Create a “feedback filter” by asking three questions:

Does this person know enough to give me this advice?

Is their feedback clear and doable?

Does it fit with what I value and want?

If the answer is “yes” to these, then the input is worth thinking about. If not, you can just say thanks and move on. This skill matters even more now with social media, where everyone shares their views. Being able to say, “I hear you, but I see it differently,” or just “thanks for sharing” without feeling you must change is a strong way to use the Let Them Theory, especially during difficult conversations.

Try This: Make two lists: one with 3-5 people whose feedback you really value and another with people or places that often make you doubt yourself. Pay more attention to the first list and practice “letting them think what they think” with the second.

StoryShot #3: How People-Pleasing Hurts Your True Self and Success

Why do we bend over backward to meet others’ wishes? It’s not just about being nice—it’s about fear.  Sometimes, we worry so much about doing the wrong things that we end up not being true to ourselves. People-pleasing is a habit many of us pick up as kids. If we grew up feeling that love or safety came from “being good” or keeping others happy, we put others’ likes ahead of our own needs. Over time, this becomes so normal we don’t even see how much energy we spend trying to make others happy. Robbins shares her own story with people-pleasing. She would say yes to things she hated, stay quiet when she had good ideas to share, and tire herself out trying to be perfect. Things changed when she saw that despite all her work to be liked, people still found fault with her—and worse, she had lost her real self.

People-pleasing hurts more than just your mood. It can block your career by stopping you from asking for what you’re worth, speaking up about key issues, or trying new ideas that might not be liked at first. It harms your close bonds by building up anger and blocking real closeness. Most of all, it removes you from your gut feelings and values—your inner guide for making good life choices. Breaking free from people-pleasing means seeing this pattern and knowing that sometimes you must let others down to live as your true self. This can be the start of a new chapter in how you relate to others. The Let Them Theory helps cure people-pleasing by letting you put your truth first, even if it makes others uneasy.

Next time when asked to do something use “the pause”. Say “Let me think about that and get back to you” instead of saying yes right away. Use this time to check what you truly want before you answer.

I had almost paid for lifetime version. The trial made me realise that I couldn't understand the accent in most of the audio books, and there were no options to choose a different accent (unlike SoBrief). Video summary were primitive. Those you suggest on youtube were better (it's disheartening that you don't offer their ad free version to your paid subscribers). Hope you would do something about it.

12/14/23 Great app. Love how responsive the customer service is and the intuitiveness of the app. Update: 4/29/25 I REALLY miss the Longshot options. It allowed a certain level of control, as I often listened to the storyshots, then read the full book. This current system isn't what I signed up for when I became a lifetime member. I'm a bit saddened by the direction this app has taken. For that, I'll be updating to 3 stars

This app actually has a FREE mode with ads and gives you the option to read, listen, or watch a video. There is a paywall, but you can always X out of it. I'm enjoying the books so far and am considering a low cost annual subscription.

I rarely write reviews, but StoryShots deserves it. I had tried other expensive apps before, never feeling satisfied. StoryShots felt like the answer I was searching for. Their summaries save my time and still feed my mind and heart. I truly appreciate the love and effort they put into this app. Thank you for creating something that genuinely serves people like me.

Thank you guys for a wonderful app, I really enjoy it. BUT the old format of summaries was way better. It explained books in a more structured, organized way. Now, with Notebook LM podcast, I feel like with each book I take away less than I used to. The AI talks non-stop, sometimes their explanations aren't clear enough, the examples they give might be confusing and unnatural for a human to conceive. I vote for the old format. EDIT: I changed it from 2 stars to 5. You deserve it anyway ❤️‍🔥

I am completely satisfied by this app. It is one of the best app for reading books in shorts time . Also the best part is that you get the written format along with the audio . And it's a great way to improve your vocabulary if you see a new word simply long press it and define pop up appears ...the induction of Wikipedia is fantastic. I absolutely love storyshots.♥️

I like this app. Just interface could be modern. Example when we give feedback or go out of app interface there is no way to go back....have to close the app and open again. Also there is no way save book in favorite in main screen. Overall I like it.

This app shines with its rich content. It gathers information from public platforms and pairs it with relevant videos and audios related to the book. The affordability stands out when placed next to other similar apps. Quality remains high, matching or even surpassing many others by linking to useful public domain videos on YouTube.

I bought a lifetime subscription and regret it. Most of the material consists of self-help books that don't interest me at all. The content sounds like it came from YouTube and other free sources. Really disappointing. Update: I appreciate the refund. The user interface looks good, just not my cup of tea when it comes to content. Cheers.

At first, it felt great. The content was engaging and insightful. Lately, though, it seems like they've shifted to using Google Notebook's LLM to summarize books. It feels less personal and more like a routine podcast. I could easily replicate that on my own. The AI misses the nuances and key themes of some captivating books. We didn't invest extra for this service; it feels like just running a book through readily available AI tools. Disappointing, really.

So far, everything has been going well. I enjoy using the app, but there's one feature that would make it even better. I’d love for the app to run in the background. Sometimes I listen to a story and then I need to check an email or a message. When I do that, the story stops playing, and I miss part of it. It would be fantastic if I could keep listening while checking my messages. Please consider this update. Thank you!

This app shines for learning. The user interface is fantastic, and the quality is top-notch. Adding more books would create an impressive collection. The Read, Listen, Watch feature feels so thoughtfully crafted. A big thanks for this experience!

This app is amazing. The summaries are fantastic. I found one aspect a bit off. Some books have TED talks instead of proper summaries. They introduce the book well but didn't meet my expectations. Other than that, I loved everything else. The UX/UI shines and makes navigation simple. Thanks for creating this app. I truly appreciate it!

The summaries are fantastic. The app is super user-friendly. You can read the summary, listen to it, and even watch related content. The premium cost is affordable compared to other apps. If you have a few bucks, it's worth it!

The price is fantastic! This app offers a treasure trove of incredible books, including fresh releases. Voting for new titles adds to the excitement. The infographics are stunning. I got lifetime access for just $25. Incredible deal! A couple of things could use some tweaking. The "free full audio book" link directs users to Amazon/Audible, which isn’t truly free. Some long shots come off as podcast episodes. A bit more quality control would make a big difference. Some felt like second-rate options just to fill space.

The app impresses with its summaries in Indian languages. That’s a huge plus! However, there's an issue when you click on search and type "it didn't." The app crashes instantly. Also, the selection of books could be better. Compared to other apps that offer summaries, this one falls short. Users can request books, but there’s no follow-up. A voting system for users to pick which books to add each month would be brilliant. It would keep everyone engaged and make the app even better!

This app offers a fantastic variety of content. Adding Chromecast capability would make it more convenient to stream audio to Google Home speakers, especially while working from home. Also, adjusting the audio levels for each book would really enhance the listening experience since some are louder than others. Thanks for considering these suggestions!
