Tips
1. Focus on Forming Sets and Runs Early
Start building your sets and runs as soon as possible. A run is a sequence of three or more consecutive cards in the same suit (e.g., 5, 6, 7 of hearts), and a set is a group of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., 8 of clubs, 8 of diamonds, 8 of spades).
Prioritize making runs and sets because they contribute directly to reducing your deadwood (unmatched cards) and getting closer to going out.
2. Keep Track of What Your Opponent Picks and Discards
Pay attention to the cards your opponent picks and throws away. If they pick up a card that could help them form a set or run, be cautious about discarding similar cards.
Discard cards that your opponent won’t need, like those they’ve already discarded earlier. This reduces the chances of them using your card to complete their hand.
3. Avoid Keeping High-Value Cards
Try to minimize high-point cards (10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces) in your hand, as they can quickly increase your score if the game ends prematurely. The goal is to have as few deadwood points as possible.
If you have to keep high cards, try to pair them with other cards to make runs or sets.
4. Consider Going for "Gin"
If you're close to completing your hand, aim for "Gin" (all your cards form valid sets and runs, leaving no deadwood). Going out with Gin gives you a 25-point bonus, which can be a game-changer.
To achieve Gin, plan ahead and keep an eye on how close you are to completing your hand. Don’t wait too long if you have the opportunity.
5. Don't Be Afraid to Knock Early
If you're behind in points, don’t hesitate to knock early if you can get your deadwood points low enough (10 points or less). Knocking early forces your opponent to play under pressure and might prevent them from achieving Gin.
