Typing on a touch screen is a pain. You can't feel the keys, autocorrect gets in the way, and the world around vie's for your tension. The good news is that scientists can now precisely replicate how people use phones and tablets in everyday life, which means better usability is on its way. Until then, here are four research-fitted tips to increase your speed and accuracy regardless of which phone you use.

Tip 1: Use Two Thumbs

Number one, use two thumbs. It's pretty clear from our research that shorter movements help people type fast. For instance, consider "A" and "N", which are very frequently together in English language. So if you type "A" and then move your finger all the way to "N", it takes a lot of time. And also, you may make more typing errors there, because the longer movement trajectory results in more noise in your finger movements.

Then again, if you just press "A" with your left thumb and then "N" with your right thumb, it's a lot faster because you can prepare your right thumb for action already before you need to press the key.

Tip 2: Keep Your Gaze on the Keyboard

Tip number two: keep your gaze mainly on the keyboard. The evidence suggests that it's better to not constantly switch your attention between the keyboard and the text area.

So when we look at very fast typists typing, what we see is that their finger trajectories are very precise. As a result, they don't really need to use vision to guide their finger—they can just look at the text entry area. So they notice errors immediately. However, probably an average typist shouldn't do this, because the movement trajectories aren't precise enough. You need your vision to guide your fingers because your fingers can't feel the keys.

And you might want to pay attention to how often you change attention from the keyboard to the text area. You may notice that you do it too often—you do it even though there are no errors to proofread. Focusing mainly on the keyboard and only doing the proofreading and moving eyes to the text entry area when necessary might be a good strategy.

Tip 3: Fix Errors Fast

Tip number three: fix errors as fast as you can. So you want to avoid constantly checking the text area, but on the other hand, you want to find the errors as soon as they occur so that you can fix them immediately.

Whenever you backspace, you lose on average about 1.5 words every minute. That means if you have to backspace 10 times, for instance, you lose as much as 15 words typed in that minute. It's faster to do a single backspace in the middle of the word than having to do multiple backspaces after you have typed the word.

Tip 4: Practice Finger Movements

Tip number four: practice certain finger movements. So if you make a lot of errors, you should really pay attention to the types of errors that you make. Maybe it's just a certain word or maybe it's a certain character that you always type incorrectly.

And then you can practice the movement trajectories. So if you want to speed up your own typing, you might want to pay attention to the very frequent finger trajectories that you do. For instance, pick the words or the combination of letters that you type very frequently and really pay attention to how you type those and try to practice those trajectories.

Lastly: Be Patient

Lastly, be patient. AI is already helping researchers simulate how people actually type in real life. Traditionally, when you study typing, you have to invite participants in and they do typing and then you observe it. With an AI that types like people, we can generate as many of these data sets as we want.

We can vary the keyboard, we can introduce different intelligent text entry aids such as error corrections. This permits us to do a lot of exploration of different designs, different conditions of typing. It lets us ask: what if the person has tremor in their finger? What sort of a keyboard would work for them when they type?

It might help us design better intelligent text entry aids so that even if we make a lot of errors when typing on a touchscreen keyboard, it doesn't matter that much anymore.

The keyboard works well overall. One concern stands out. The microphone should be on the top right side. This change would boost its functionality. Currently, typing fast proves challenging because of this setup. I’m giving it 2 stars for now. I hope the developers can fix this soon. Thank you!

Very nice, I like that it includes swipe and the layout is the same as Gboard. Just wish there were more themes or ability to pick your own colors, the current colors are too bright and can cause OLED screen burn in. Would like an all fully black theme with white or gray text only. Also, would like to disable emoji suggestions and customize or hide the toolbar shortcut. And I would like to turn off AI and online capabilities.

The keyboard is decent overall, but there is a suggestion to place the microphone on the top right side for improved functionality. This minor issue affects its suitability for fast typing. Update: I was able to turn off the personalized search, but there's still a banner telling me it's turned off. There's also no setting to turn off the ads. It could be a good replacement for the much heavier Swift key keyboard, but it lacks arrow keys and most of the other features, like pressing and holding to delete an entire word at once, personal dictionary edits, autocorrect options across the top, and others. I was able to use this keyboard on other phones without the ads or search.

I love this keyboard so much. It is better than Gboard and Yandex. Yandex used to be the best, but now this one is even better. Yandex lags when it comes to voice text, often freezing and not producing natural flow words. Additionally, it is a Russian keyboard and not an English one. This keyboard gives me pounds, while Yandex gave me dollars.
