The Yo-Yo Intermittent Test assesses endurance with a framework reminiscent of sports such as soccer, basketball, and other high-intensity "stop-and-go" activities.
This app enables you to perform the following:
* The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test at Level 1 and Level 2
* The Yo-Yo Intermittent Endurance Test at Level 1 and Level 2
as established by Jens Bangsbo from Copenhagen University in December 1994.
- provide voice prompts or ringtones of your choosing
- indicate seconds to reach the shuttle halfway point
- show seconds until the next speed level
- display seconds during recovery periods
- present distance covered (including shuttles) and total time elapsed
Upon completion, the app will offer you
- the highest Level achieved
- the total distance covered
Note: An approximate estimate of VO2Max will be given only for Recovery Level 1 if at least 1000m (level 15.6) has been completed.
This app does not permit you to save your results directly (the Pro version does); however, you can take a screenshot by pressing the power and lower volume buttons simultaneously.

Title: Yo-Yo Intermittent Test: An Indispensable and Precision-Focused Tool for Athletes and Coaches
My experience using this application for conducting the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test has been exceptionally positive, providing a level of accuracy and convenience that surpasses traditional manual methods. As a tool for assessing athletic endurance, it is remarkably well-executed. The interface is clean and focused, presenting all critical information—time to the next beep, recovery countdown, and total distance—in an easily digestible format during the high-intensity stress of the test.
The ability to use custom audio cues is a fantastic feature, allowing our team to use a familiar sound that cuts through the noise of a busy gymnasium. The real-time feedback, especially the vocal warning for the halfway point of each shuttle, is invaluable for pacing and helps athletes maximize their performance. While the basic version doesn't save results, the prompt to take a screenshot is a practical workaround.
The inclusion of reference data from Bangsbo's research provides immediate context for interpreting results, which is incredibly useful for benchmarking. This app has proven to be an reliable, professional-grade tool that delivers a scientifically rigorous testing experience right from your smartphone, making it an essential resource for any serious athlete or coach focused on high-intensity interval training.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
• What audio options are available for the pace cues?
The app allows you to use pre-set voice prompts or select your own ringtone/audio file for the beeps, providing flexibility to suit different training environments.
• Can I save my test results within the app?
The standard version does not include a save function. However, you can take a screenshot of your results (showing level, distance, and estimated VO2Max if applicable). The Pro version offers full saving, exporting, and graphical analysis capabilities.
• What is the difference between the Recovery Test and the Endurance Test?
The Intermittent Recovery Test (IR1/IR2) features short recovery periods between shuttles and is designed for measuring an athlete's ability to recover from intense exercise. The Intermittent Endurance Test (IE1/IE2) has a different pace structure and is used to assess pure endurance.
• Is the VO2Max estimation accurate?
The app provides an approximate estimate of VO2Max only for the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1, and only if a distance of at least 1000m (level 15.6) is completed. It is a useful guideline based on established research, but for precise laboratory-grade measurement, professional testing is recommended.
