1954: the birth of UEFA

The story of UEFA began in the early 1950s as a quest by national governing bodies across the continent. Their goal: to unite the European game in a spirit of solidarity to develop the game on and off the field.

Many of these bodies wished to expand their activities, so their national and club teams could play either international friendly matches or in a competition setting. They also sought to enhance the development of key sectors of the game, such as training coaches and match officials, as well as to leverage the rapidly growing medium of television.

"The European national associations decide definitively on the constitution of a group of the said associations, under a form to be determined."

Motion agreed at UEFA’s founding meeting in Basel, Switzerland – 15 June 1954

The road to European football union – based on mutual cooperation and solidarity – gathered speed between 1950 and 1954 thanks to three pioneering figures: Italian Football Federation president Ottorino Barassi, Belgian Football Association general secretary José Crahay, and French Football Federation president Henri Delaunay. The trio worked tirelessly behind the scenes to set the course for a new dawn of European football.

15 June 1954: A new European football adventure

In 1953, world football body FIFA opened the door for UEFA’s foundation by giving the green light for the creation of continental football confederations. On 15 June 1954, Europe’s national associations met in Basel, Switzerland, to rubber-stamp the formation of a pan-European football body – kicking off the construction of a footballing Europe.

1950s

The fledgling UEFA took little time to find its feet after its foundation in June 1954. Important projects were quickly set in motion – none more so than the launch of two major competitions: the European Champion Clubs’ Cup for club teams, and the European Championship for national teams.

"The Champion Clubs’ Cup is a wonderful new initiative…"

Henri Delaunay, UEFA’s first general secretary

Iconic competitions

The Champion Clubs’ Cup kicked off in September 1955. Spanish club Real Madrid would dominate the competition’s early years, winning the trophy five times in succession.

At the same time, the idea of a European national team competition gained strength, leading to the European Championship making its bow in September 1958. Both competitions were to become iconic pillars on the European football landscape.

The app shows a login error. It says someone else logged in from another phone. I didn't switch devices or anything. I just updated my phone. The problem remains. They keep telling me to go to the stadium on match day to sort this out. It doesn't make sense.

You can't open any of your upcoming or past tickets for WEuro. It’s a frustrating situation. You might want to check the app or website where you bought them. Sometimes, logging out and back in can help. If that doesn't work, reaching out to customer support could be another option. They should be able to assist you with the issue.

Just got a new phone and it feels great, but ran into a little hiccup. I can't access the app I used on my old phone. Super frustrating! Even more annoying, there's no contact info in the app for help. Trying to figure out how to get back in.

Beware! The app struggles with Android 13 Beta4. It's frustrating not being able to access tickets. Finding them online feels almost impossible.

What a frustrating experience! Arrived nearly an hour early for the game, ready to go. Along with many others, I tried to log in for what felt like ages. A solid 40-45 minutes wasted just getting error messages about no internet access, even though my connection was fine. I turned my phone off and on again a couple of times, but nothing worked. Other people seemed to have no trouble. I have more tickets, so I'm stuck with this app for now before I can finally delete it. Thank goodness I only had my own ticket saved on there, not my kids' too. The entire ticketing process has been such a hassle!

The splash screen won't go away. Frustration builds as the tickets stay out of reach. Tapping the screen brings no results. The excitement fades with every failed attempt. Time passes, and so does the chance to grab those tickets. What a letdown.

Registering took an endless amount of information. The app didn't work smoothly. Many others faced the same issue. No alternative to collect costly tickets except through this troublesome app. I tried four times. Cleared the cache and finally got in. It’s stressful, especially when waiting until the last minute.

Getting a ticket feels like jumping through hoops. They ask for tons of personal data. Instead of just sending an e-ticket PDF like other venues, it’s all about downloading their app. You have to hand over your ID numbers and let them track your location too. It’s a real hassle.

After you install the app, it asks for media access to save photos or videos from the app. This lets you share your experiences. Rooted devices get flagged because they might have security risks. Developers want to ensure that user data stays safe. As for UEFA asking for birthday and ID details, they're trying to verify identities. This keeps things secure, even if it’s just for a football match. They want to keep everything legit.

The verification email didn't come through. The game starts in less than 24 hours. That’s stressful! You need to get that sorted quickly. Check your spam folder. Sometimes emails hide there. If it's not there, try resending the verification request. Contact support too if things don’t work out. Time is running out, but stay focused. You’ve got this!
