Our Story

1998

In the late ’90s, Daniel Forsgren was watching golf from his living room in Sweden and growing increasingly frustrated. He couldn’t see the ball.

Seeing the ball—something so fundamental to the golf-viewing experience—was next to impossible with the technology of the day. So Daniel set out to make a change.

2003

He spent the next several years tinkering with a new kind of camera with sensors that could detect a golf ball flying through the air. The sensors connected to a computer that looked for a small, white object and identified it through each frame of the shot. Daniel quit his IT job in 2003 to focus on developing a prototype.

2006

In 2006, Protracer was born.

Soon after, the PGA TOUR, European Tour, and television outlets all over the world jumped at the opportunity to partner with Protracer. Golf fans could finally see the flight of a golf ball through on-screen graphics, along with speed, distance, and other valuable insights. Watching golf on TV would never be the same.

2012

On a quest to bring the technology to an even bigger audience, Protracer launched the first prototype of Protracer Range in 2012. The system, which used the very same technology seen on TV, could be installed at driving ranges to trace and analyze shots hit by ordinary range-goers.

2016

Impressed by Daniel’s innovation and inspired by his company’s mission to enrich the game of golf, Topgolf Entertainment Group acquired Protracer in 2016 and rebranded the tech as “Toptracer.”

2021

In 2021, tradition met technology when Toptracer struck a long-term partnership with The Home of Golf. As the official range technology of St Andrews Links, Toptracer Range was installed at St Andrews’ practice facilities and the Old Course is exclusively available to play virtually at Toptracer Range-enabled courses around the world.

Today

Today, Toptracer can be seen on major championship golf broadcasts throughout the golf season. Toptracer Range is an “Official Range Technology” of the PGA of America and its nearly 28,000 PGA Pros worldwide, and the tech is installed in more than 24,000 bays globally.

It's amazing to see the average yardages for each club. You get clear data on carry and rollout distances. Tracking trends across practice sessions shows real progress. It also measures how far off line shots land compared to the aim point. Such valuable insights!

Just started using the My Practice feature, diving back into golf after 25 years. Had no clue about how far each club hits. Club speed feels a bit fast for my club flex. Based on my calculations, club speed is roughly ball speed divided by 1.4. I’m all about data and noticed a gap in the app. It really needs an export option for the data. I want to analyze it further and play around with AI to gain insights. Also, having a way to delete some shots later on would be fantastic. Kind of like a mulligan when playing, you know?

This app works well for Toptracer ranges. It tracks most shots effectively. However, it doesn't seem to capture every shot. When I check the recap, the number of shots taken is noticeably lower than expected.

The bays have screens filled with tons of data. It doesn't show up in the app. The average scores on the app miss out on the complete picture. It's just like playing the game; you focus on the great shots and try to overlook the not-so-great ones. The developer has the potential to add much more to the app.

Using the app feels more like a game than a serious tool for analyzing shots. You get a massive list of every shot, which is fun but not really helpful. Filtering shots is a hassle because you have to select each one by hand. This means my average distances for clubs include my early attempts and don’t reflect where I am now. It makes everything seem pretty pointless. Plus, there’s no option to export data for personal analysis. It looks nice on the screen, but it doesn't offer much in terms of practical use.

The app is frustrating. Tech support is not helpful at all. An annoying bug has been lingering for over six months on Android, and no fix in sight. Reporting issues leads to the same unhelpful responses. Switching between shot distance and carry data just doesn’t work, and that information is crucial. Sending feedback and screenshots feels pointless. Better to steer clear of this one!

Android users might find themselves in a bit of a bind. Toptracer shines at the range with shot-by-shot details, club distances, and dispersion patterns. The experience can feel exceptional there. But the app does not live up to expectations. It lacks all that detailed data available on the range, leaving it feeling nearly pointless for performance reviews after a session. The inability to delete individual shots adds to the frustration, especially if you accidentally record a shot with the wrong club.

Jumping back into golf after a five-year break feels exciting. I've hit the driving range three times, and it's been fantastic. The 7 iron carries about 170 yards for me. Watching the trajectory of each shot brings a lot of joy. It's also amazing to see my son starting his golf journey. Plus, the app comes with some great extras that make everything even better. Thumbs up all around!
