Tomplay: My Digital Orchestra – Why Practicing Feels Like Performing Now

As a violinist who spent years struggling with metronome clicks and lifeless backing tracks, discovering Tomplay felt like unlocking a new dimension of music-making. This isn’t just sheet music with background audio—it’s a dynamic, responsive partner that adapts to your pace, transforming solitary practice into a collaborative performance. The moment I first played Grieg’s Morning Mood alongside Deutsche Grammophon-caliber accompanists—hearing the woodwinds breathe with my phrasing while the scroll synced flawlessly to my tempo—I was hooked. Unlike static apps, Tomplay’s Visual Guide demystified complex fingerings in real-time, helping me conquer a Paganini caprice section I’d avoided for months.

The loop feature let me drill tricky bars while the "orchestra" patiently repeated them, and recording myself revealed nuances I’d missed mid-practice. What truly sets Tomplay apart is how it scales with growth: beginner arrangements build confidence with chord symbols and simplified notation, while advanced scores challenge precision alongside rich ensembles. Whether prepping for auditions or unwinding with Studio Ghibli jazz covers, Tomplay makes every session feel purposeful. It hasn't just improved my technique—it reignited my joy for playing by making me feel heard, not alone.

This is fantastic! Using it with an EWI wind controller for live shows takes everything to another level. Great backing tracks and loads of playback options make it a standout choice. Bravo indeed!

Disappointment runs deep. Other apps send clear warnings about upcoming subscriptions. This one just shoots out a "thank you for your payment." No way to check the subscription's validity. I've seen others getting refunds, but my request got ignored. Frustration builds. I wouldn't recommend this app. The music selection? Only about 30-40 pieces for my instrument. Just a couple of original works. The rest? Revised opera songs. Best to steer clear of this app.

This app is fantastic! I've enjoyed it so much with my Clavinova 785. Playing duets, trios, quartets, and concertos feels like jamming with amazing musicians. The experience brings a whole new level of fun and creativity to practicing.

This app impresses with its collection. It has potential for growth. Midi support is still missing, which means I often struggle to play the right notes. When it comes to sheet music for multiple instruments, there's no option to hide the ones I don't need during practice.

Stay away from this app! You sign up for a free trial, and bam! They hit you with a $119 charge for a yearly subscription without any heads-up. No emails, no warning at all. When you reach out, they say it's a mistake but refuse to give you your money back because of their so-called "policy." I've used several music apps, and this one stands out as the worst experience by far.

These arrangements are quite good and the selection of music is impressive. Keep in mind, using background tracks for public performances for profit is not allowed. Small gigs are fine, but make sure to credit TomPlay if someone asks. I appreciated the variety of arrangements, but I didn't find myself using them at home as much as I'd hoped. I decided to update my review to add another star since they reached out to me positively. Thank you, TomPlay!

I love this app, but I've faced some issues recently. The support team hasn't been much help. It's been over a week since I reached out for assistance, and they stopped responding. Some of the music I bought isn't available. The app claims my subscription lapsed, but I purchased those songs individually. I'm really not happy about that. UPDATE: I decided to uninstall and reinstall the app. Now everything works perfectly! It would have been great if they had suggested that when I first contacted them.

Absolutely amazing! The yearly price feels so fair. Tons of fantastic music across various genres waits for you. For an intermediate pianist, this tool shines brightly. You can practice each hand separately while the other hand plays along at your chosen speed. An incredible perk includes orchestral backing for some pieces. It creates a delightful feeling of brilliance, even if it’s a bit misleading!

Great app with lots of potential. Here are some suggestions after trying it out. Add a feature for users to navigate using bar or measure number inputs. This would help skip the scrolling through long pieces. Include an option for users to save and reload preset configurations. Think combinations of tempos, audio track selections, and loops. Make it possible for the metronome to sound alongside other audio tracks. Try to minimize how often users need to rotate the screen between different interfaces.
