Star Battle can be described as both an object placement puzzle, similar to Battleship or Trees and Tents, and a binary determination puzzle, akin to Hitori or Nurikabe. Many users find it to be a fascinating blend of Sudoku and Minesweeper. It is also known as "Two Not Touch," a title used by The New York Times, and "Queens," under which there's a 1-star variant on LinkedIn. This puzzle was designed by Hans Eendebak for the 2003 World Puzzle Championship.

Star Battle Review: An Elegant Symphony of Logic and Enlightenment

Having immersed myself in countless sessions of Star Battle, I can confidently declare it a masterclass in elegant, cerebral gameplay. Far from being a mere Sudoku clone, this puzzle demands a uniquely intricate dance of deduction where every placement reverberates across the entire grid. What captivates me most is the profound satisfaction of those "lightbulb moments" — when recognizing that only one cell in a jagged region can hold a star because of diagonal constraints in adjacent sections feels like unlocking a secret layer of reality. The puzzles escalate beautifully; "Easy" levels lull you into a soothing rhythm of logical patterns, while "Expert" grids become consuming battlefields where a single misstep collapses an hour’s progress.

Yet, the genius lies in its unparalleled hint system. Unlike other puzzle games that merely correct errors, Star Battle’s hints teach — explaining why a star cannot occupy a cell or must reside in another, transforming frustration into genuine learning. I frequently found myself resisting hints, only to feel pure triumph when the solution clicked via pure deduction. The clean interface — especially the soothing dark mode during late-night solving marathons — ensures zero distractions from the crystalline logic. Whether unwinding with a gentle 10x10 puzzle or dissecting a formidable 15x15 monster, Star Battle consistently delivers that rare blend of tranquility and intellectual exhilaration. It’s not just a puzzle; it’s a meditation on precision.

FAQ

Is it as repetitive as Sudoku? Not at all. Irregular regions and diagonal constraints force entirely new solving approaches each puzzle. Logic evolves dynamically.

Do hints ruin the challenge? No — they’re pedagogical. Explanations deepen understanding rather than giving answers, making harder puzzles more approachable.

How’s offline play? Flawless. Perfect for flights or commutes. All puzzles/downloads reside locally after first access.

True to "no guessing" promise? Absolutely. Every solve path relies solely on logical elimination. Guessing always breaks the rules.

Replay value after solving? Infinite. With procedurally generated puzzles across 4 difficulties, each playthrough reshapes your strategy.

This mobile puzzle game hits all the right notes. It keeps you on your toes with its challenge, but never crosses over into frustration. Ads stay out of the way, only popping up between levels to let you focus on the fun. No paywalls block your progress, so you can dive in without worrying about costs. Hints are free and abundant, letting you play at your own pace. This game shines with its simple design that puts players first.

This game is perfect. So simple but incredibly addictive! The levels keep things interesting without needing to collect tokens or coins for hints. I paid to remove the ads after just half an hour. Not because they bothered me, but because I knew I'd be playing non-stop. The ad removal is super affordable, and buying extra levels costs hardly anything too. It's such a fun game! ♥

This game blew me away! It mixes elements of logic, minesweeper, and sudoku in the best way. Every challenge feels exciting and engaging. No annoying in-app purchases get in the way. Levels range from easy to expert, so there's something for everyone. Plus, you pick up tons of strategies as you move forward. Such a well-crafted experience!

I found a fantastic new puzzle app that reminds me of Sudoku. I played through all the levels and had a blast. You can choose between easy, medium, hard, and fiendish levels which keeps things interesting. No pressure to spend money, but buying extra puzzle packs is totally worth it. The ads are minimal and quick. This game is super addictive and fun. Once you finish a puzzle or level, you can redo any of them if you want. I highly recommend it! Next up for me is the Hashi puzzle game from the same company. Thank you! 💜

The biggest surprise came from the helpful tips! They provide guidance even when things get confusing. Instead of just skipping a puzzle or filling in a square without explanation, this game actually teaches you. It shows you where you went wrong and how to fix it for tougher challenges ahead. So refreshing compared to other games!

I really love this game. It sparks my imagination and gets me thinking differently. The only problem is the music. When I keep the volume off, this random kid music starts playing on repeat. It's like a surprise attack when I'm trying to relax at night. It catches me off guard and wakes me up. This music doesn’t come from ads; it just pops up during gameplay. There’s no option to turn it off in the settings either, which adds to my frustration. Because of this, I dropped my rating from five stars to three. I hope this gets fixed soon!

I play this game constantly. It's incredible. The game really helps you learn how to play. When you need a hint, it explains the reasoning behind it, not just throwing random answers at you. You can double-check your progress too, which is awesome. The interface looks great and feels smooth. There's a bit of a learning curve, so taking time to figure things out pays off big time. I watched some YouTube videos, and now tackling those tough puzzles is a breeze for me.
