Missing essential features for professional use

Smart Pianist enables you to explore the various features of your Yamaha digital piano through your Android device. This unique application offers its full range of features when paired with the innovative Clavinova CSP series digital pianos.

Features:

- Instantly learn to play your beloved songs with the unique Audio to Score function. When connected to the Clavinova CSP, this feature automatically generates a piano accompaniment score from songs stored in your music library. *The Audio to Score feature is exclusive to the Clavinova CSP.

- Smart Pianist simplifies the selection of instrument Voices and adjustment of settings by transforming your smart device into a touch-screen graphical interface for your digital piano.

- The app allows you to replay song data such as Preset songs and commercially available tracks. In addition to enjoying playback, you can practice along as they play. The app displays notation for hundreds of built-in MIDI songs, and you also have the option to acquire additional songs from Yamaha MusicSoft.

How To Use:

- Tap the “MasterTune” slider; drag left or right to raise/lower global pitch (default 440 Hz). Double-tap the slider to snap back to 440 Hz instantly. Press “Done” to lock the new tuning.

- For instrument choice, hit “Voice Select” → “Brass & Woodwind”.

• Browse categories (Sax Solo, Brass Ensemble, etc.).

• Tap any voice (e.g., “Rock Sax” or “Soft Alto Sax”) to audition it; starred ★ voices are favorites.

- To jump straight to piano sounds, open “Piano Room” and pick “CFX Grand” or “Bosendorfer”.

- In Piano Room, adjust “Lid Position” and “Brightness” sliders for tonal color, then set “Touch Curve” to match your playing style. Use “Environment” to place the piano in Recital Hall, Concert Hall, etc. for reverb.

- Fine-tune realism with individual switches: VRM, Damper Resonance, String Resonance, Key-Off Sampling, Half-Pedal Point, and Each Key Setting. Toggle on/off as desired. Save your favorite combinations to the “Favorites” list for instant recall later.

- That’s it—tune, choose, tweak, and play!

The app does what it’s supposed to do, but it definitely needs improvements. The user interface is not appealing. It opens in full screen, yet leaves big black borders at the top and bottom. It hides the status bar and navigation buttons, making navigation harder. Connecting to the Digital Piano can be a bit of a hassle, but once that connection is established, it seems to function well. Overall, it feels a bit sluggish in performance.

This app definitely needs improvement. First, it should have landscape orientation or at least portrait upside down. Most Android phones have the USB connection at the bottom, which makes it tricky to use. Second, many songs won’t load, even if they are in the right format. There’s no error info or explanation. So frustrating! Third, when you hit the back button, the app just exits. Then, when you open it again, it restarts from scratch. What is going on? This can be better!

Everything was going great until I tried recording on the app and transferring it to Dropbox. Suddenly, my grand piano changed to a harpsichord. No clue why that happened. Spent hours trying to fix the issue, but nothing worked. I even uninstalled the app. What a pity!

Android users are feeling left out. The app struggles to work, and it’s completely missing from Chrome OS. Android runs on more devices worldwide, but Yamaha focuses mostly on Apple users. It’s disappointing. I wish I had known this before investing in such an expensive digital piano.

I connected my P-125 and discovered the Ocarina voice option before using the app. After I connected my phone, the voices changed to just what the manufacturer set. I expected to add or layer different voices while my phone was connected via USB. I'm excited to see new voices for the piano, but I wish I could mix in other sounds when the phone is hooked up. If that feature is added in the future, I’ll definitely give it a five-star rating. That's what I really wanted!

The app is nice and has some clever features. It lacks practicality for recording piano on my phone. It does record, but the volume is too low. It might be my settings, though that isn't the biggest issue. My phone doesn’t charge while recording through USB, leading to sudden shutdowns. The last point really puzzles me. Why send recordings to Dropbox? Why not just email them to a friend directly?

You've been struggling with getting the app to work on your EZ220. The keyboard just won't connect. You tried using a cable instead of WiFi, and when you reach the final screen, it shows "target instrument not found." That’s frustrating. Yamaha really should ensure compatibility with all tablets before launching. It reminds you of the issues Microsoft had with Windows 10. They didn’t get off scot-free either. At least they reacted quickly to provide patches. You just want Yamaha to step up and take action.
