Retro Goal – A Surprising Banger from New Star Games

Alright, so it’s been a couple of months since New Star Games, the same geniuses who gave us Retro Bowl, dropped their newest title — Retro Goal. I knew about it when it came out. I saw it. I even thought, “Okay, this could be cool.” But for some reason… I just didn’t care at the time.

Fast forward to now — content’s running dry, and I’m in desperate need of a new mobile game to dive into. So I figured, why not finally give Retro Goal a shot?

First Impressions – Simple But Slick

First of all, shout out to New Star Games for the marketing. The name “Retro Goal” is a brilliant follow-up to “Retro Bowl.” Rhymes, nostalgia, and sports — can’t go wrong. And the logo? Clean. There's even a Brazilian player mid-volley in the logo, and you already know Brazilians are absolute ballers. Neymar, Ronaldinho, Thiago Silva — I see what they’re going for.

As soon as I booted up the game, the interface gave me serious Retro Bowl vibes. You start by naming your coach, choosing your favorite team (yes, they have actual Premier League teams!), and then begin your career as a manager. I tried picking Newcastle, but ended up at Coventry — the game had other plans for me.

Gameplay – Pick Up and Play Meets Tactical Depth

Just like Retro Bowl, Retro Goal eases you in with some tutorials. Shooting, dribbling, passing, heading — it’s all smooth and satisfying once you get the hang of it. The visuals are charmingly retro, but don’t let that fool you — the gameplay is surprisingly deep.

You don’t control the entire match, only key moments in attack and defense, kind of like a highlight reel. I was skeptical about this at first, but it actually works really well. You get to focus on those high-stakes plays, without getting bogged down by slower parts of the match.

The mechanics feel intuitive after a few tries. Flick to pass, double-tap to shoot, swipe to tackle — the controls are mobile-friendly and responsive. I even messed around with formations, going full-on attacking mode with three at the back. No parking the bus here — we play beautiful football!

Graphics & Sound – Big Heads and Bigger Vibes

Okay, I have to say it: the characters’ heads are hilariously huge. They look like pixel-art bobbleheads or NFTs gone wild. But somehow, that adds to the charm. The animations are snappy, and every goal feels rewarding.

Sound-wise, it’s nothing too fancy, but it fits. The retro effects and crowd noises get the job done, and the game’s pace keeps things exciting from the first whistle to the last.

Monetization – Fair, But Not Free

You can play up to 10 matches for free, which is a nice little taste. After that, you gotta pay a couple bucks to unlock the full game. Honestly? It’s worth it. The game feels polished, fun, and totally replayable — easily worth the price of a coffee.

There’s also a transfer market where you can buy players using in-game currency or real money. I didn’t drop any cash yet, but it’s there if you want to speed things up.

Final Thoughts – Should You Play It?

Surprisingly, Retro Goal might be one of the best mobile footy games I’ve played recently. It’s fast, fun, and way deeper than it looks. If you’re a fan of Retro Bowl, football (soccer), or just enjoy quick strategic games on the go, you need to try this.

I actually had way more fun than I expected. And now I’m wondering… should I buy the full game and bring Coventry to the Premier League?

Let me know — but either way, Retro Goal is a win in my books.

Rating: 8.5/10 — Big heads, big goals, big fun.

Imagine diving into a game that feels like New Star Soccer but cranked up to eleven. Exciting, right? Some players voiced their concerns about the in-game purchases. But here's the thing: with clever transfer strategies, you can navigate just fine without shelling out any cash. It's not all about having top-tier players on your roster. After wrapping up my fourth season, I pulled off a remarkable feat. I led Coventry to back-to-back Champions League victories without spending anything extra. Achievements like this make the experience even more satisfying!

I put a ton of time into Retro Bowl and was super excited to try this game. Even though I don't know much about soccer, it's been a blast. Just like the last game, it's simple to understand and a lot of fun to play. Totally worth the 0.99 cents. If you all want to dive into basketball next, I’d happily pay for that too!

This game really keeps you engaged. It highlights some awesome improvements and fresh changes in Retro Bowl's gameplay. The descriptions of the games could use a little work, though. Having an encyclopedia or reference guide would be super helpful. One thing that frustrates me is when I lose the ball even when my defenders are clearly in control. Mobile games like this one are among my favorites, but I can't help dreaming about a hockey version!

This game brings a ton of joy for a few seasons. It's absolutely worth a dollar. After some time, it becomes easy to master. Once you reach the highest difficulty, hitting 95% of chances feels routine. You might even push that to 99% with a little more effort. Sure, you can create your own challenges like avoiding star players or limiting how you score, but if those ideas don't appeal, things can feel repetitive. Expect to lose some excitement after four seasons.

Transferring teams can feel exciting at first. New opportunities, fresh challenges. Then reality hits. You land in the T1 league with a rookie team. Out of nowhere, you face a complete rebuild of facilities. Why join an EPL team if there's nothing to start with? The whole point feels lost. Contracts skyrocket in price while cash flow barely improves. Progress becomes a frustrating struggle. Each step forward feels like a crawl. Disappointment sets in. The fun quickly fades away.

The game is a blast! It really shines but needs some extra features to take it to the next level. Imagine having a trophy lift scene that adds excitement. A list of top scorers and clean sheets would bring more depth, along with individual awards like in retro bowl, which is another favorite of mine. Adding these elements would definitely boost the game's rating to five stars. Also, I need to mention the transfer data issue. I enjoy having the premium version on my iPad, but switching to my new phone has been a bit tricky without data transfer. Implementing that would really help players like me. So overall, I’d give it four stars right now. There's so much potential here, and I can't wait to see how it evolves! Keep up the great work!

No ads or microtransactions in sight. Not a soccer fan, yet here I am in year 10, celebrating a Champions League victory. It’s such a brilliant game filled with fun. Made it this far without spending any money, then decided to drop a few bucks as a thank you to the creators. Once you stick with a team for a while, it becomes pretty easy. Maybe they could stretch out the journey to build your dream team. Overall, fantastic game!

I had my doubts about a mobile game capturing the essence of football. This one surprised me! The games are quick, perfect for on-the-go play. The attacking scenarios keep things exciting. The automatic defending adds a layer of strategy. Coaching and managing elements are simple yet addictive. For just a dollar, it offers great value!
