Retro Goal – A Surprising Banger from New Star Games
Alright, so it’s been a couple of months since New Star Games, the same geniuses who gave us Retro Bowl, dropped their newest title — Retro Goal. I knew about it when it came out. I saw it. I even thought, “Okay, this could be cool.” But for some reason… I just didn’t care at the time.
Fast forward to now — content’s running dry, and I’m in desperate need of a new mobile game to dive into. So I figured, why not finally give Retro Goal a shot?
First Impressions – Simple But Slick
First of all, shout out to New Star Games for the marketing. The name “Retro Goal” is a brilliant follow-up to “Retro Bowl.” Rhymes, nostalgia, and sports — can’t go wrong. And the logo? Clean. There's even a Brazilian player mid-volley in the logo, and you already know Brazilians are absolute ballers. Neymar, Ronaldinho, Thiago Silva — I see what they’re going for.
As soon as I booted up the game, the interface gave me serious Retro Bowl vibes. You start by naming your coach, choosing your favorite team (yes, they have actual Premier League teams!), and then begin your career as a manager. I tried picking Newcastle, but ended up at Coventry — the game had other plans for me.
Gameplay – Pick Up and Play Meets Tactical Depth
Just like Retro Bowl, Retro Goal eases you in with some tutorials. Shooting, dribbling, passing, heading — it’s all smooth and satisfying once you get the hang of it. The visuals are charmingly retro, but don’t let that fool you — the gameplay is surprisingly deep.
You don’t control the entire match, only key moments in attack and defense, kind of like a highlight reel. I was skeptical about this at first, but it actually works really well. You get to focus on those high-stakes plays, without getting bogged down by slower parts of the match.
The mechanics feel intuitive after a few tries. Flick to pass, double-tap to shoot, swipe to tackle — the controls are mobile-friendly and responsive. I even messed around with formations, going full-on attacking mode with three at the back. No parking the bus here — we play beautiful football!
Graphics & Sound – Big Heads and Bigger Vibes
Okay, I have to say it: the characters’ heads are hilariously huge. They look like pixel-art bobbleheads or NFTs gone wild. But somehow, that adds to the charm. The animations are snappy, and every goal feels rewarding.
Sound-wise, it’s nothing too fancy, but it fits. The retro effects and crowd noises get the job done, and the game’s pace keeps things exciting from the first whistle to the last.
Monetization – Fair, But Not Free
You can play up to 10 matches for free, which is a nice little taste. After that, you gotta pay a couple bucks to unlock the full game. Honestly? It’s worth it. The game feels polished, fun, and totally replayable — easily worth the price of a coffee.
There’s also a transfer market where you can buy players using in-game currency or real money. I didn’t drop any cash yet, but it’s there if you want to speed things up.
Final Thoughts – Should You Play It?
Surprisingly, Retro Goal might be one of the best mobile footy games I’ve played recently. It’s fast, fun, and way deeper than it looks. If you’re a fan of Retro Bowl, football (soccer), or just enjoy quick strategic games on the go, you need to try this.
I actually had way more fun than I expected. And now I’m wondering… should I buy the full game and bring Coventry to the Premier League?
Let me know — but either way, Retro Goal is a win in my books.
Rating: 8.5/10 — Big heads, big goals, big fun.
