Growing as a trainee: the career of Gustaaf van Oosterom

Gustaaf grew from trainee to global public affairs officer at Randstad. "In terms of job satisfaction, I'm absolutely at the top of my game." Read here how he ended up at Randstad, the roles he fulfilled during the traineeship, and what his work entails now.

How did you end up on this traineeship?

Gustaaf: "After I finished my Master's degree in Political Economy at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), I worked in an academic environment for a while. It was incredibly educational, but ultimately, it wasn't for me. I wanted to apply for jobs and, for the first time, I really talked with friends, family, and my girlfriend about: what characterizes me?"

Based on those conversations, he concluded that he no longer wanted to work in an academic environment, but rather in an environment with people. "I'm sociable, curious, and positive."

Gustaaf's qualities stem from his international background: he grew up in several countries. It all began when he was adopted from Beirut by his Dutch parents as a four-week-old baby and lived in Damascus until he was two. "I find it interesting to see the choices people make and why. For example, my parents' choice to adopt me."

Once he came into contact with Randstad, Gustaaf immediately felt at ease. "People were honest and open. They told me: 'You can just be yourself during those conversations; you don't have to lie. You have a unique story, a strong drive, and you're a smart guy; we think everything will turn out fine.' I thought that was so cool. And it was true: during those conversations, I talked about my adoption without it being used against me."

What roles did you fulfill during the traineeship?

"I started as a recruitment consultant at Randstad in Utrecht." He then became a senior recruitment consultant. "Then you're much more focused on your team's figures and advising other teams on how they can work more effectively. You become more of a coach for other colleagues."

After two years in the traineeship, he became the manager of a recruitment team consisting of six junior recruiters. "More and more people joined, until I eventually managed 23 people. I really enjoyed that, because that's when I truly learned how to lead. Think of effective communication, influencing people, working with a mission, purpose, and strategy, and acquiring new Randstad clients."

How did you end up in your current position?

"I'm currently the Global Public Affairs Officer. In that role, I don't manage, but I represent the company externally. From the moment I joined Randstad, I had contact with Public Affairs. I knew: I come from a diplomatic background, I studied political economy, and I've grown up internationally. So if there's ever an opening there, I'll definitely apply."

The experience he gained during the traineeship is incredibly useful in his current position. "By working as a recruitment consultant for years, I learned how to help people find work. That's how I know how to create policies that truly help people."
