World Radio Day: Celebrating the magic of the airwaves
Radio in Costa Rica: A History of Pioneers
- The history of radio in Costa Rica has its roots in the 1920s, when local enthusiasts began experimenting with this new technology. The undisputed pioneer was Amando Céspedes Marín, who on May 4, 1928 inaugurated TI4NRH in Heredia, becoming the fifth shortwave station in the world and the first in Latin America.
- Don Amando, as he was known, began his radio adventure by building a regenerative one-tube receiver on November 2, 1923. Fascinated by the voices that came from afar, he soon became a receiver manufacturer, producing some 800 devices to meet the growing local demand.
- In January 1927, Don Amando began regular AM transmissions with a five-watt transmitter, establishing Costa Rica's first radio station. Seeking to reach more distant audiences, he experimented with shortwave, and by 1928 he was already receiving reception reports from Panama and the United States. Its TI4NRH station gained international recognition, receiving and responding to more than 110,000 reports in 11 1/2 years of broadcasts.
- The development of radio in Costa Rica continued with the founding of Radio Universidad de Costa Rica on November 29, 1949, shortly after the Costa Rican Civil War of 1948. Over time, more stations, both commercial, educational, and religious, sprang up, forming the diverse radio landscape that characterizes the country today.
Five iconic Costa Rican radio stations
Within the framework of World Radio Day, it is important to recognize those stations that have left their mark on the Costa Rican radio landscape. These stations have not only survived the passage of time, but have become cultural references for generations of Costa Ricans, demonstrating the enduring importance of this means of communication in Costa Rican society.
1. Radio Monumental
Founded in the 1950s, Radio Monumental has become one of the pillars of Costa Rican broadcasting. Broadcasting on 93.5 FM and 670 AM, this station is recognized for its news, current affairs and sports programming. The old towers of Radio Monumental, located in Goicoechea, are considered a historical landmark that celebrates Costa Rica's rich history of radio broadcasting. The station is particularly known for its coverage of local and national sporting events, especially football, an extremely popular sport in the country.
2. Radio Columbia
With a prominent presence on the Costa Rican dial for decades, Radio Columbia broadcasts on 98.7 FM and has been one of the two most important network news and novela stations in Costa Rica. Its studio building, located on San Jose's main street, housed a live studio for the production of its popular drama shows. Over the years, Radio Columbia has maintained its commitment to quality information and entertainment, adapting to technological changes without losing its essence.
3. Radio Faro del Caribe
Founded on February 23, 1948 as the first evangelical Protestant radio station in Central America, Faro del Caribe has been a constant voice in the Costa Rican radio landscape. Broadcasting on 97.1 FM and 1080 AM, this religious station has maintained its mission of disseminating spiritual and educational content. In the 1970s and 1980s, Faro del Caribe was internationally known for its shortwave transmissions on 9645, 6175 and later 5055 kHz, which went surprisingly far despite using only two kilowatts of power.
4. Clock Radio
Founded as Radio Cristal by Roger Barahona in 1945, the station changed its name to Radio Reloj in 1958 when it modified its format to focus on news and community announcements with frequent timestamps. Roger's brothers, Isaac and Francisco, joined the broadcasting company, and Radio Reloj became one of Costa Rica's best-known radio voices for several decades. Although the original station no longer exists, its legacy continues through an FM music station called Momentos Reloj.
5. Radio Universidad de Costa Rica
Beginning its transmissions on November 29, 1949, shortly after the Costa Rican Civil War of 1948, Radio Universidad de Costa Rica was the first radio station of the University of Costa Rica. Currently broadcasting on 96.7 FM, this station has maintained its commitment to the dissemination of knowledge, culture and intellectual debate. As part of "Radioemisoras UCR", which also includes Radio U (101.9 FM) and Radio 870 UCR (AM), the university station has been fundamental in the training of generations of communicators and in the promotion of high-quality educational content.
World Radio Day: a tribute to an eternal medium
- World Radio Day invites us to reflect on the enduring importance of this medium in our society. Despite the emergence of new technologies and communication platforms, radio maintains its relevance as an accessible, immediate and close medium to communities.
- In Costa Rica, radio has witnessed and played a leading role in historic moments, has accompanied the development of the country and has served as a space for dialogue and cultural expression. The iconic stations mentioned are just a sample of the rich Costa Rican radio heritage that deserves to be celebrated and preserved.
- On this World Radio Day, we recognize not only the history and achievements of this medium, but also its potential to continue connecting people, spreading knowledge, and promoting cultural diversity in the future. Radio, with its unique ability to reach every corner and adapt to change, continues to be a fundamental voice in the Costa Rican and global media landscape.
