Story Review: My Crazy High School Romcom!
Reddit /GeniusBishoujo icon
My Crazy High School Romcom stands in a weird place for me as a story that provides really entertaining moments, but as an overarching plot doesn’t work quite as well. The whole plot revolves around a love triangle… love… square? Pentagon? A tangle of complicated relationships between you, your best friend and 3 different girls. Let’s go over them first.
First, we have Isabella. I won’t lie, I found Isabella unbearably annoying at first. She constantly switched between being upset at everything you did to being your biggest fan. But later on in the story it’s implied you actually know her from your childhood. I mean, I guess she ended up being alright but the fact that her transformation from annoying to an actually great girl seemed out of left field. I would much rather have that shift be gradual rather than as sudden as it was.
Next, we have Nina. She falls in a strange place for me where I both dislike and pity her. She has a crush on your best friend and asks you for help, but as he has no reaction, she gradually develops feelings for you instead. I don’t have a problem with the change in feelings, but what I do have a problem with is how poorly she was developed. Similarly to Isabella, her change feels extremely sudden and it’s something I can’t get over. At the same time, I also pity her because this game does her dirty in some endings. For example, in Isabella’s ending, your best friend ends up with the third girl and Nina moves away to a baking school. It’s never stated outright and yet I can’t help but feel that the double rejection had influence over her decision. If you ask me, worst choice out of the three.
Finally, we have Rachel. She’s a childhood friend who recently returned from abroad and… you probably guessed it, she’s the childhood friend crush trope. She’s probably my favourite out of the three because even if she’s a really static character, even unchanging characters are better to me than ones with botched, unexplained development. The tricky part is that your best friend has a thing for her, creating a love triangle… shape, but I think it works because it makes for believable drama that can be used in a story.
The plot overall revolves around the dynamics between these 4 characters and yourself. There’s no overarching event guiding all of this, it’s just a slice of life sort of story. So what do I think of this?
Verdict: C-tier (Ok)
Don’t get me wrong, I think slice of life stories have their place in Genius Bishoujo. I would rate a lot of them higher than even stories that are centred around some main plot. But that’s only if they do every aspect perfectly, and as I covered, the girls most certainly are not. It says quite a bit when my favourite girl in the story is one with little development. But overall I think it still works well enough to be in mid-tier.
