1. Fixed Income vs Variable Income

In a fixed income investment, the way of calculating the rate of return is previously defined. It can be a pre-defined percentage or it can be based on some index (which may not give you the certainty of the final return, but it will give you the certainty of how it will be calculated). Have you heard that? That's right, they can be pre or post-fixed.

On the other hand, in an investment in variable income, the rate of return is not defined, not even its calculation method. The classic example of variable income is stocks, whose prices fluctuate according to the market's buy and sell offers, and do not follow any pre-defined calculation.

2. Pre-Fixed vs Post-Fixed

An investment is pre-fixed when the rate of return on the investment is already known at the time you make the investment. In this case, you already know how much your money will yield, regardless of what happens in the economy. It is a way of guaranteeing a certain income in advance.

On the other hand, an investment is post-fixed when the yield will only be known in the future. Usually this yield will be linked to some other index. For example, a certain investment may offer you an annual yield on the inflation rate (such as the IGPM or IPCA) plus 6% fixed interest. Thus, its final yield will only be known in the future (later), when the inflation rate for the entire period is released.
