The MetroArte projects are large-scale art installations located in different stations, which make important works by renowned artists accessible to the general public. Since 1993, when the first work was installed ("Urban Interior," an oil on canvas by artist Hernán Miranda), MetroArte has transformed the Metro into an open gallery, a public museum, a meeting place where passengers can daily appreciate works by Roberto Matta at Quinta Normal station, Mario Toral at the University of Chile, Guillermo Muñoz Vera at La Moneda, Samy Benmayor, Francisco Smythe, and Guillermo Lorca at Baquedano, among many others.
Today, with 81 works and more than 11,000 square meters of permanent art, MetroArte stands out for its dynamism and combines different techniques, ranging from traditional oil paintings to graphic prints, as well as sculptural murals, broken ceramic murals, and signature sculptures. These are permanently installed in a station, giving it a unique touch.
The dioramas by national artist Rodolfo Gutiérrez (Zerreitug) are models depicting human figures, vehicles, and animals, miniature recreations that bring a scene from the past to life. The figures are carved from wood and painted, and are generally placed against a backdrop that simulates a real environment and includes lighting effects.
There are currently 24 dioramas in Metro stations. The first was installed in 1987 at the Cal y Canto station and depicts the construction of the bridge of the same name.
Bibliometro was founded in 1995, following a cultural alliance between the Directorate of Libraries, Archives, and Museums (DIBAM) and the Santiago Metro. This allowed for the implementation of book lending centers in Metro stations, bringing reading closer to all users.
