Mei is an enhancement of the standard SMS/MMS messaging application included with your device, merging the finest elements of messaging with unique features not found elsewhere.

Developed by creators who recognized a demand for a more comprehensive messaging solution and were weary of repetitive functionalities across various applications, we aimed to design one that fulfills all user desires and surpasses expectations, offering choices at each stage, opportunities to connect with others, and even chances to earn rewards.

Our app stands out as the only option featuring an optional advanced AI assistant named Mei (pronounced ‘May’), providing tailored insights about your conversations. Think of Mei as a trusted mentor or close friend who is always available to share personalized advice or observations regarding your discussions.

What’s the most effective way to communicate with someone? Is your friend's tone slightly different today? Could someone you just met be interested romantically?

Mei can identify insights and personality traits of your contacts during chats or simply from stored messages on your device (no need to exchange texts through our app first!). The AI is designed to keep you informed, ultimately fostering improved dialogues and relationships.

Enjoy free international communication securely, as we are the first messaging application to implement RCS (an upgrade to SMS via the internet) with end-to-end encryption when engaged in conversations with other users. Similar to iMessage's dual bubble system, messages revert to SMS/MMS (green bubbles) when interacting with non-users.

Customize the app completely, choosing theme colors and backgrounds. Organize conversations into folders and send bulk messages to custom groups. You can even transfer chats from other messaging platforms and convert them into SMS.

Connect with others through polling and the "Stream," where we link you to people, news, and products based on your communications. Additionally, accumulate credits towards your phone bill by using the app through our micro-transaction system.

Works seamlessly with MightyText, Pushbullet, and mySMS for desktop and web access (a dedicated desktop version will be launching soon). Mei also syncs with any Android smartwatch or wearable device.

Our two applications, Mei and Messages Improved, share several common features. Messages Improved focuses more on commercial aspects, experimenting with advertisements and connecting users to desired products and services. This allows Mei to concentrate on nurturing personal relationships and facilitating opinion exchanges.

About Us

Mei (pronounced ‘may’) develops messaging technology that combines the latest AI to improve communication and efficiency. Our company was founded in 2016 by Es Lee, with the belief that data and AI, incorporated into the messaging channels we already use, could help create deeper human connections.  Our team is primarily based in New York City, with developers around the world.   

We developed the first SMS texting messaging app with built-in AI that provides personalized coaching and advice. Our latest products allow anyone to create customized AI that can communicate for them or replicate the coaching and interactions that were only possible with humans before. We’ve developed and deployed dozens of products and will continue to experiment with frontier technology.  We welcome partners in this journey.

Technology has made it easier than ever to make new connections but the tools to help us maintain and enhance those connections haven’t progressed at all.  

Our team has spent nearly a decade combining natural language processing, developing machine learning and neural network models, and one of the largest datasets of its kind to create an AI that can understand people through their text messages, and ultimately help co-pilot and automate authentic communication. 

We started working on this because we felt technology and data could be used to improve the most important thing to many of us: our relationships. Since every relationship is different, AI can be most helpful if it can first learn about each user to personalize the help.  Today’s AI, specifically large language models, may have 200+ IQ, but still lack emotional intelligence (EQ) which we’d like to work with partners towards changing.  

Our guiding principles with our products to provide users access to information and technology that aren’t available elsewhere, while letting users decide and control how they want to use it.
