Elena Mitrevska appointed new Artistic Director of The Danish National Vocal Ensemble and Concert Choir 

From 1 January 2026, Elena Mitrevska will take over the artistic leadership of the choirs of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), also known as the Danish National Vocal Ensemble and Concert Choir. With choral leadership experience in four different countries and previous collaborations with DR’s choirs, Elena brings international perspective and close familiarity.

One of the rising stars of the international choral scene, 42-year-old conductor and choral director Elena Mitrevska has been appointed the new Artistic Director for the Danish National Vocal Ensemble and the Danish National Concert Choir. She succeeds Michael Emery, who steps down after ten successful years.

Mitrevska joins DR with extensive experience from leading roles in Vienna, Oviedo, Skopje, and most recently Malmö, where she currently serves as Chorus Master of Malmö Opera. She has previously worked with DR’s ensembles, most recently leading the Danish National Vocal Ensemble’s Heavenly Light concerts during the Copenhagen Light Festival and rehearsing the Danish National Concert Choir for the Galaxymphony concert series.

Nordic roots and new horizons

Though her professional experience spans Europe, Mitrevska is deeply committed to the Nordic vocal tradition that defines DR’s choirs:

– After five years in Scandinavia, I have the greatest respect for the region’s unique choral tradition, and I’m excited to explore the rich musical roots of DR’s choirs. Both ensembles are internationally known for their distinctive sound – rooted in a strong tradition and the treasured Danish song heritage, which we will continue to honour, she says.

At the same time, she aims to expand the choirs’ repertoire in collaboration with living Danish composers:

– It’s vital that we continue to look ahead. By working with composers of today, we can help shape the choral music of tomorrow and inspire future generations.

Dialogue with singers and audience

In her role as Artistic Director, Mitrevska will work closely with Chief Conductor Martina Batič and a range of international guest conductors, including the choir’s Honorary Conductor Marcus Creed:

– My role will be to serve as a creative partner to these outstanding artists, whom I greatly respect. But just as importantly, I will lead the two choirs in close dialogue with the singers themselves, whose experience and insight are invaluable.

Mitrevska also highlights her commitment to the choirs’ audience:

– Artistic development must never be a goal in itself – it must always be grounded in engagement with the world around us. As a conductor, I understand the importance of audience connection, and I’ve felt the overwhelming support for DR’s choirs – whether in the concert hall, in churches and venues across the country, or via DR’s media. Preserving that connection through familiar, unfamiliar and entirely new choral music will be our greatest mission.
