One of the oldest streaming services, this former Sony property launched in 2004 and is currently owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. A broad range of movies and TV shows—more than 5,000!—are on offer.

How much does it cost?

It’s totally free! However, you do have to watch ads (did we mention it’s free?), and it’s only available in the United States.

What’s in the library?

The streamer’s eclectic assortment of films features all the usual genres (comedy, horror, thriller, drama, sci-fi, family). Some highlights: the moving 2018 drama Bel Canto, based on Ann Patchett’s award-winning novel; the 2013 airplane thriller Non-Stop; tons of galloping Westerns old and new, like 1939’s Stagecoach starring John Wayne or 1991’s tenderhearted My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys; and the funny 1983 sex romp Losin’ It (with a young Tom Cruise!).

Feeling nostalgic for TV from decades past?

You’re in luck. Sample titles include time-honored classics like beloved variety hit The Carol Burnett Show, spook-filled soap opera Dark Shadows, the shenanigans of Spanky and the gang in The Little Rascals, 1980s superhero fantasy The Greatest American Hero and more. On the newer side, check out Chris Rock’s hit 2005–09 comedy Everybody Hates Chris and the first four seasons of the British crime smash Line of Duty. Both series and movies are also grouped into eye-catching themes such as “Epic Disasters,” the concert films of “Now Touring” and even “Demons and Exorcisms”!

    This app is frustrating on my Samsung phone. I attempted to watch several videos. Each time, I ended up watching an ad before getting an error message about the video not loading. I hit "retry," watched another ad, and faced the same issue again. I wanted to reach out to Support for help, but that feature is broken too. The required fields like device type and location won't let me enter anything. It feels like a complete waste of time.

    I remember when I tried Crackle for the first time. It was an enjoyable experience, and the ads didn't bother me at all. But now, it's a different story. All it does is play ads. I've attempted to watch a movie several times. The first time, I paused it for a moment. When I came back, just a blank screen stared at me. I closed the app and restarted it, but nothing played. I even uninstalled and reinstalled it, but still no success. Now, I'm on the hunt for something that actually works. I recommend steering clear of this app until they sort out these issues.

    Downloaded the app just for one movie. Planned to delete it afterward. At first, the app kept crashing. Only after restarting my phone did it finally work. Then I tried casting to my TV. Used my Galaxy S21 Ultra on a Verizon unlimited plan and a brand new Chromecast, all close to the modem. Despite that, the connection dropped at least three times during the movie. It gets a semi-pass since it’s free, but that's about it.

    This is amazing! So much better than many paid services out there. I used to pay $5.99 for CBS All Access with commercials, or $9.99 without. The commercial breaks felt endless, and the longest break here is just 60 seconds. That rarely happens. I really dislike commercials, but I find this app much more tolerable than others that cost money. Plus, the selection of programs and movies is impressive, with options you won’t find on Netflix. Just give it a shot. If it’s not for you, just uninstall it!

    Let’s dive into Crackle. The bad stuff hits hard. Buffering appears constantly. Picture quality sometimes turns into a pixelated mess. Ads take over, showing up way too often, with some like Jack in the Box being downright creepy. The overall picture quality? Just okay. A mix of many so-so movies. On the flip side, there are bright spots. The sound stands out; it’s fantastic! Subtitles on foreign films are placed thoughtfully, not blocking the action. Some hidden gems pop up, older flicks and unique foreign titles. And the best part? It won’t cost you a dime!
