Obi: The Ultimate Solution for Cost-Effective Ridesharing
Having integrated the Obi app into my daily routine for several weeks, I am thoroughly impressed by its seamless functionality and the tangible financial benefits it delivers. My personal experience consistently confirms that this tool is indispensable for anyone who regularly uses ride-hailing services.
The primary advantage lies not just in seeing price comparisons, but in the app's intelligent aggregation of options from Uber, Lyft, and local taxi services into a single, intuitive interface. This eliminates the tedious process of manually switching between multiple apps to check wait times and fares. I've found that for my frequent airport trips, the savings are substantial, often allowing me to choose a premium service for the price of a standard ride.
Beyond mere cost, the app provides a wonderful sense of efficiency and control; I can make an informed decision in seconds, confident that I'm selecting the best combination of price and estimated arrival time. The fact that this powerful service is completely free, with no hidden fees or markups on the fares, makes it an exceptional value. Obi has fundamentally changed how I book transportation, turning a typically frustrating process into a simple, money-saving activity.

The Cost of Autonomy: Tesla, Waymo, and the New Rideshare Battleground
This exclusive Obi report is the world’s first comprehensive, side-by-side analysis of Waymo and Tesla pricing, pickup times, and availability, measured directly against Uber and Lyft. The results point to fundamental shifts in how rideshare markets will price, scale, and ultimately restructure as autonomy moves mainstream.

In June 2025, Obi released The Road Ahead: Pricing Insights On Waymo, Uber and Lyft, the world’s first research report that compared Waymo’s pricing and wait times to those of Uber and Lyft in the Bay Area during a trial that ran from March 25 to April 25. It showed that Waymo rides were priced 30-40% higher and yet riders were eager to not just try them, but prioritize them. Obi also investigated wait times (which could be significantly longer for Waymo’s during peak times) and consumer sentiment toward Waymo and autonomous rideshare in general.
The fast-moving autonomous rideshare sector has changed considerably since that report came out, so it’s important to understand where things stand today. This report contains data captured between November 27, 2025 and January 1st, 2026. Waymo remains the only fully driverless ride option available throughout the entire city of San Francisco (as well as its surrounding area), and it continues to enjoy a first-mover advantage in terms of driverless rideshare. But competition has begun to emerge. Tesla began deploying its Robotaxis in San Francisco in July 2025; while all cars come equipped with a human safety monitor because Tesla’s technology has not yet secured approval to operate fully autonomously, they still offer a completely novel rideshare experience.
The above chart summarizes average prices across Tesla, Waymo, Lyft and Uber. The big takeaway? Tesla is by far the outlier – significantly cheaper across the entire pricing study. However, the report provides many further insights on Waymo, Uber and Lyft pricing and ETAs.
The high-level findings in this report:
Waymo is closing the pricing gap with Uber and Lyft. The 30-40% premium that Obi detailed in June has been significantly narrowed – and for longer rides, the premium can almost disappear. This is due both to Waymo’s prices dropping and Uber’s and Lyft’s prices rising.
Waymo is now an average of 12.7% more expensive than an Uber and 27.3% more expensive than a Lyft.
For rides between 4.3 and 9.3 kilometers, Waymo is only 2% more expensive than Uber and 17% more expensive than Lyft per kilometer.
Tesla is challenging existing rideshare market economics with cheaper, more consistent pricing. Obi’s data shows that the price for a Tesla robotaxi ride in San Francisco rarely exceeds $10, averaging $8.17 vs the next cheapest option, Lyft, which averages $15.47. That’s a staggering $7.30 average price variance.
Tesla rides show a Price Per Kilometer (PPK) never seen before in Obi’s reporting, averaging $1.99 per KM vs Waymo’s $5.72 per KM. And Tesla shows no patterns of demand-based price surges or hikes.
Waymo ETAs are now converging with Uber and Lyft – but the price for cheap Tesla rides is patience. Tesla shows by far the longest wait times. Tesla’s average ETA of 15.32 minutes is considerably higher than all three other services.
Waymo’s average ETA is 5.74 minutes. Outside of a peak demand time in the afternoon when Waymo ETAs are significantly longer, the robotaxi pioneer’s wait times are frequently shorter than Uber’s and are getting closer to Lyft’s at many times of the day.
Comfort levels with autonomous taxis are rising – at least, they are in places where AV rideshare is available.
In our survey of adults in states where at least one company operates autonomous rides (California, Arizona, Texas, and Nevada) 63% say they are comfortable or somewhat comfortable with AVs, and only 16% say they are uncomfortable. This is a huge increase from our last survey, in which only 35% of respondents said they were comfortable or somewhat comfortable with AVs.
Methodology: Obi, using our Intelligent Pricing API, ran an in-depth hour-by-hour one month analysis of rideshare data (11/27/2025 to 1/1/2026) for standard ride types – Waymo, Tesla FSD (Supervised) Rideshare, Lyft Standard, and UberX – across the city of San Francisco and into the South Bay. A total of 94,348 rides were part of the dataset, tracking hourly request records, pricing, and ETAs. In addition, Obi’s Autonomous Ride Survey 2026 gathered unique viewpoints from 2,002 consumers in U.S. states where at least one service is offering the ability to hail autonomous rides (California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas). At the time this study was conducted, there were estimated to be 156 Teslas vs. 1000 Waymo. During the previous 2025 Waymo pricing study there were approximately 688 Waymo vehicles.
