How to Create Multiple Apps with ProductFlavors in Android Studio Flavors
What is the purpose of creating versions of an app in Android Studio Flavors? Often, people want to test different algorithms for the same application or reuse code to create a similar app. Many solutions involve creating a new project, changing the calls to different functions for each version, and modifying environment variables each time (application ID, content provider, assets, etc.). Using these methods makes the code difficult to maintain, understand, and update.
A good solution for creating variants of an application in Android Studio is productFlavors. Each version of our app can have different features or requirements for different devices. Additionally, flavors can be combined with different build types. Each combination of productFlavor and buildType constitutes a build variant. Different APKs or applications will be generated depending on the variant used.
ProductFlavor + BuildType = Variant
Build Types
This Gradle tag controls how apps are compiled and packaged. By default, the system defines two types: debug and release. Debug adds additional debugging code to the source code and also signs the app with a debug key. Release is unsigned by default and is the commercial version uploaded to Google Play. Additional build types can be added as needed. In video 1 and video 2, we explain in more detail why the buildTypes tag is important and how to use it properly.
What is a Module?
According to the IntelliJ IDEA definition, a module is a discrete unit of functionality that can be run, tested, and debugged independently. Modules can contain source code, scripts, unit tests, etc. In Android, a module is used as a library or for unit testing.
Module Structure
Modules have the same structure as an Android project; the only difference is the plugin the module uses. This plugin is defined in the build.gradle (library) file.
