Canada Removes LMIA Bonus Points from Express Entry
As of March 25, 2025, Canada has officially removed the 50-200 CRS points previously awarded for LMIA supported job offers in Express Entry. This change was first announced last year by former Immigration Minister Marc Miller, so while it may not come as a shock, it is still disappointing for many candidates who relied on these extra points to boost their scores.
How This Change Affects Express Entry Candidates
For years, LMIA-supported job offers provided a significant advantage for Express Entry candidates, making it easier to reach the cutoff score and receive an ITA for permanent residency. With the removal of these bonus points, many candidates will now see a drop in their overall CRS scores, which could shift their ranking positions within the Express Entry pool.
However, this change also presents a silver lining for candidates who never received LMIA related points. Since many applicants will experience a reduction in their CRS scores, the overall CRS cutoff in upcoming draws may decrease, making it more accessible for those who previously fell just below the required threshold. If you did not rely on LMIA points, you could now have a better chance of receiving an ITA in the next draw.
Why Did Canada Remove LMIA Bonus Points?
The decision to remove LMIA-related points was driven by concerns over fairness and integrity in the Express Entry system. Former Minister Marc Miller stated that some individuals were paying for job offers solely to obtain additional CRS points, rather than securing legitimate employment opportunities in Canada. This practice created an unfair advantage, allowing some candidates to bypass the competitive ranking system.
By eliminating LMIA points, the government aims to create a more level playing field, ensuring that all candidates are evaluated based on their skills, experience, and qualifications rather than their ability to obtain an LMIA backed job offer through questionable means.
What This Means for Future Express Entry Draws
With LMIA points no longer part of the system, the Express Entry landscape is expected to shift. Here's what candidates can expect:
Lower CRS cutoffs: Since many candidates will lose 50-200 points, upcoming draws may require lower CRS scores, benefiting those who previously fell short.
Greater emphasis on human capital factors: Express Entry will now place even more weight on factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.
Increased competitiveness in job offers: Genuine job offers will still be valuable, but they will no longer provide an unfair boost in CRS scores.
