How to Post Videos on X
With the introduction of X's video tab, users can now share vertical videos to enhance engagement, aligning with the platform’s increasing emphasis on video content in 2025. Posting videos in the correct format ensures they appear in the dedicated vertical video feed, boosting visibility.
To post a vertical video on X:
Tap the "+" icon on the homepage.
Select the media icon to upload a video file from your device.
Once uploaded, the video will appear in your post, where you can add text, hashtags, and a location.
After publication, your video will be viewable in both the main feed and X’s video tab. In the main feed, the caption displays above the video, whereas in the video tab, it appears as an overlay at the bottom.
When posting videos on X, consider the following key points:
X does not impose strict video size restrictions, but vertical videos (9:16) display optimally in the X video tab, filling the screen in fullscreen mode.
Widescreen videos (16:9), typical on platforms like YouTube, will remain uncropped in the post feed but appear much smaller in the video tab.
How to Edit Videos on X
Before uploading your video, ensure it is fully edited, as X does not offer advanced editing tools like text overlays, automatic subtitles, or clip splicing. Currently, the only built-in editing option is video trimming.
However, X does provide several video content settings:
Download permission toggle – Enable or restrict video downloads within the app.
Content warnings – Flag videos containing sensitive topics (e.g., nudity, violence).
These settings can be accessed by selecting the gear icon on the video editing screen.
While these settings assist in reaching the appropriate audience, they don't inherently boost a video's engagement. Take captions, for instance; adding them increases the likelihood of viewers watching a video until the end by 80%.
For content creators and business marketers, pre - posting video editing is crucial for maximizing engagement. Additionally, resizing videos in advance ensures proper display on X, enhancing their performance potential.
How to Upload an SRT File and Add Automatic Captions
X does not provide automatic or manual captioning on its mobile app or desktop site. However, desktop users can upload an .SRT file to add closed captions to their videos.
To do this:
Create a new video post and click Upload caption file (.srt) beneath the video.
Select Upload captions and choose your SRT file.
Once uploaded, viewers can enable captions by tapping the CC option in the bottom right. Captions appear in white text with a black border, centered on the screen.
X does not provide customization options for font, text color, or placement. If you need these features, Kapwing allows you to edit captions and can automatically generate them with up to 99% accuracy.
Generating Automatic Captions with Kapwing
Start by uploading your video to the Kapwing editor. If your video is already online, such as on YouTube, you can import it directly by pasting the URL.
After uploading, open the Subtitles menu from the left sidebar and select Auto Subtitles to generate captions automatically.
Once generated, the subtitles will be added to your video and organized in the timeline. To edit them, select them directly from the timeline or use the transcript box on the left.
Lastly, spend some time editing your captions. Adjust the color, font, and style to align with the theme of your post. These minor details can elevate the look of your content, making it appear more refined and professional. Additionally, they improve accessibility for a broader audience.
Apart from captions, resizing your video to suit X's display is another straightforward method to enhance its visual appeal. Given that 57% of X visits originate from mobile devices, optimizing your content for mobile viewing is crucial. This ensures that your video reaches and captivates the largest possible audience.
