The Yell app is developed by Yell Ltd, the entity behind the Yellow Pages, which is recognized as the leading business directory in the UK.

About Yell

Yell can trace its company origins back to 1966 when the Yellow Pages business directory first launched as part of the General Post Office telephone directory. The company became part of BT in 1984 before being sold in 2001 for £2.14 billion, making it then the largest non-financial leveraged buyout in European history.

A strategic approach taken over the last decade has evolved Yell into a fully digital business which completed in 2017 when the Yellow Pages ended production, to now solely focus on providing digital marketing services for UK small and medium sized businesses.

Drivers could face up to £25,000 in fines due to faulty tyres in cold weather

Yell

As icy conditions continue to hit the UK this winter, driving conditions are becoming ever more treacherous. But are you making mistakes that could cost you?

While most drivers know to be extra cautious during the snowy months, many are unaware of the common mistakes made throughout the winter that are actually breaking the law and could result in hefty fines.

Due to the wintry conditions, Google searches for “are summer tyres ok in the winter UK” have skyrocketed by 700% over the last 30 days, whilst searches such as “do you need winter tyres in the UK” have risen 200% over the last 30 days compared to the same period as last year.

Understanding the legal responsibilities that come with winter driving is just as important as adapting to the weather. This is why the driving experts at Yell are warning drivers of the common mistakes that lead to hefty fines when driving in cold weather this winter.

An illegal tyre tread depth could cost you up to £10,000

Throughout the winter, adequate tyre tread depth is essential for maintaining control on snow and ice-covered roads. While the legal tread depth all year round is 1.6 mm, driving experts recommend between 3 mm and 4 mm, especially for the winter season. A deeper, more substantial tread allows tyres to channel snow and water away from the road, improving grip and reducing the risk of skidding or aquaplaning.

If a tyre is worn below its limit, it is considered illegal to drive on and can result in severe fines. The highest monetary fine is up to £2,500 alongside up to three penalty points on your licence for each illegal tyre. This means that if all four tyres are below the legal limit, the total fine could reach £10,000 and accrue enough penalty points that could lead to a driving ban.

A quick and easy way to check your tyres' tread depth at home is the 20p coin test. Insert your 20p coin into the main grooves of your tyre with the outer rim facing downwards. If the outer border of the coin is still visible, your tread is below the minimum requirement and will need changing before driving on the roads. If the border of the coin is hidden, tread depth is acceptable, and it will be safe to drive on during winter conditions.

Incorrect tyre pressure could result in a driving ban & £10,000 fine

In cold weather, tyre pressure can drop significantly (around 1 psi per 10°C), which results in reduced tread grip and tread depth. These are both critical when it comes to traction on snow and ice, as it significantly affects things like braking distances and control whilst driving.

While there is no specific tyre pressure rule, tyres must be roadworthy, so if you are found with significantly underinflated tyres, the fine mirrors the same as illegal tread depth. This means that it will be £2,500 and 3 penalty points per underinflated tyre, resulting in a maximum of £10,000 if all 4 are found to have low pressure according to The Road Traffic Act 1988.

Easy ways to check your tyre pressure at home include:

Using a basic pressure gauge: for the most accurate reading, check tyres when they are cold (before driving)

Dashboard warning light check: while it doesn't show exact tyre pressure readings, if the TPMS light is on, it is a strong indicator that one or more tyres are of low pressure

Visual sidewall check: walk around your car and check for tyres that appear flatter at the bottom

Skidding on your tyres in the snow could result in a £5,000 fine

Whilst there is no law in the UK about driving on summer or all-season tyres during the winter months, these tyres are prone to skidding and resulting in the loss of control in snowy and icy conditions.

If you are caught driving too fast in snowy conditions on damaged or illegal tyres that do not comply with the Highway Code and therefore lose control of your vehicle, you could be charged with careless driving. On top of the £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per damaged tyre, you could be facing an additional £5,000 fine and a whopping nine penalty points, resulting in having to appear in court for careless driving.

Top tip: whilst ensuring your tyres are roadworthy, take extra care on summer or all-season tyres and slow down in snowy conditions. Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front to maintain control and reduce stopping distance.
