2. Do I need to purchase maps separately? Are they expensive?

Maps do need to be purchased separately, but they offer excellent value. Official topographic contour maps for most countries and regions are only €3.99/£2.99/$3.99 each, and include future map updates. A few maps require a higher fee due to copyright issues. After purchase, the iOS app can be synced to all Apple devices via your Apple ID, and the Android app can be synced to all Android devices via your Google Play account, eliminating the need for repeated purchases.
