What Is the VShred Diet?

The VShred diet is an eating plan that accompanies VShred workouts

The diet is primarily constructed around one fundamental concept: That your body type should determine what you should eat. More specifically, VShred builds its meal plans around three body types:

Endomorphs: People who naturally have higher amounts of fat and muscle. They tend to gain weight more easily than other types.

Ectomorphs: People who are naturally leaner. They tend to have gain weight less easily than other types.

Mesomorphs: People who have a natural ability to gain muscle and lose fat.

From there, VShred offers two options for its diet plans: one based on carb cycling, a nutritional practice with a goal of muscle gain and weight loss, and the other on counting macronutrients (or "macros"): protein, carbohydrates, fat.

VShred offers you basic meal plans for these diets and then option to pay for a customized meal plan.

The basic meal plans are low in calories, with some dipping below 1,200 calories a day. Otherwise, the foods on the meal plans include normal, everyday choices that most people can find in a supermarket. Sweet potatoes. Blueberries. Chicken breast.

What Does the VShred Diet Cost?

That depends.

Each program is advertised for between $47 and $99, but there are plenty of upsells, including meal plans and supplements.

Does the VShred Diet Work?

It may, at least for the short-term. But that's not because of any little-known scientific loophole or diet plan engineered for your body type.

Let's take VShred's first claim: that Harvard-backed weight-loss loophole.

The "loophole" is actually the hormone irisin, which, yes, Harvard studied way back in 2012, but there's been very little published about it from a solid scientific research standpoint since. To me as a dietitian, that's a red flag.

VShred diets also cite TRPV1, a receptor that helps produce brown fat, which is a type of fat that may help burn calories. TRPV1 has also been studied ... in mice and lab dishes; not humans. (Another flag.)

Then let's look at body-type-specific dieting.

“The reality is there is zero evidence to support these body types and zero evidence to suggest you need to eat differently according to someone's categorization of your body to these 'body types,'" says Layne Norton, Ph.D., a nutritional sciences researcher. To put a finer point on it: "VShred's marketing is long on claims but utterly devoid of evidence," Norton says.

To summarize, although VShred does link to studies in marketing material and point to its glowing testimonials as evidence that their diet works, the bulk of that research is preliminary and inconclusive. And, as of yet, no clinical research has been done on the VShred diet specifically.

To step back a bit more, yes, you may still lose weight after going on a VShred diet. But that’s not because of any fancy loopholes or body-type-adjusted plans. It's because the VShred diet is low in calories. Anytime you can maintain a calorie deficit for any length of time, you’ll lose weight.

But just because a diet helps you lose weight doesn't mean it's great for you.

You've used this app for nearly two years. Recently, the Fat Loss Extreme workout videos keep timing out during workouts. The app kicks you out completely, taking you back to the calendar screen. Getting back to where you left off is impossible. You've updated the app twice without any improvement. Now, you scramble to remember your exercises and set your own timer to finish the workout. It’s really frustrating.

The website and app struggle on Android. Developers ignore the need for a mobile-friendly portal for Android users. They focus on Apple devices in their coding. This leads to cut-off text, regardless of whether the screen is vertical or horizontal. A fix should be easy with cascading style sheets, but after countless emails and online chats, the response remains frustrating. They suggest options like casting to a TV, using a desktop, or switching devices instead of addressing the issue.

The experience feels overwhelming with constant ads pushing products, subscriptions, and meal plans. After spending $57 on a basic plan, frustration sets in. The app greets you with an hour of videos urging you to "order now before the price goes up." It's all just a calendar filled with bullet points for exercises. No way to mark off individual exercises. You realize this information is easy to find online or available in free apps. Disappointment hits hard. It’s not worth your money at all.

I really enjoy the workout feature of the app. It gives me the freedom to exercise anytime and anywhere. However, the food section causes some frustration. I simply want a clear list of acceptable foods and portion sizes. Creating a meal plan doesn't fit into my busy life. To help with that, I rely on my Fitbit to track calories and portions. On a positive note, I feel that the supplements are having a great effect.

On July 14, 2020, the issue got resolved. I bought the extreme fat loss program along with burn supplements. Last night, I downloaded the app but faced trouble accessing it. Each time I selected the female option, the app crashed. I restarted my phone and reset my password, but nothing worked. This situation was lowering my confidence about the purchase. I came across several reviews mentioning bugs that have been present since July 7. In today's tech-driven world, this doesn't reflect well on Vshred. I need assistance.

This app is fantastic, especially for workouts. It provides well-organized routines along with videos that demonstrate the correct forms. You can explore additional routines focused on specific muscle groups too. The app is user-friendly and easy to navigate. I would give it 4.5 stars. One downside exists; some text descriptions get cut off on the phone but display fine on PC or laptop. This makes it tricky to read some information while at the gym.

What a nightmare! This feels like such a huge scam. The workouts are anything but easy or simple. Losing weight and getting in shape? Definitely not happening here. I was told there wouldn’t be any crazy long workouts, yet that’s all I’ve experienced. The app is messy, totally unorganized. The recipes? A chaotic mess. This has been the biggest waste of money for me. I really wish I had deleted it sooner. Maybe then I could have snagged a refund, but it seemed silly to pay for an app and then ditch it within two days. Just so let down…

The app offers a full 90-day program, but tracking progress is nonexistent. You really need to remember what day you're on. The ads are everywhere, making it tough to focus. Those metabolism boosters and protein shakes are pushed so hard that you might end up buying something, even if you don't think you need it.

The app really boosted my fitness journey. It’s essential to get one of the programs for a better experience. On Android, the API acts up sometimes. It misses recording past fitness days and has logged me out before. I’ve struggled with sticking to my goals because of mental health challenges. Luckily, getting back on track felt seamless, without any guilt. The app offers tips on healthy eating and stresses the importance of not starving yourself. Its encouraging vibe has made a real difference in my health.

Don't buy anything from the app. It doesn't work properly. I tried the trial for the ripped in 90 days program. I really liked the workouts and videos, so I purchased the bundle. Now I can’t access the program or anything that came with it. I submitted a support ticket, but all I received was an email full of ads for their supplements.
