I checked this out as a potential replacement for Viewranger. It has some features, but it falls short in important areas for hiking. You can’t drag a cursor around the map to see distance or elevation changes from your current spot. Adding waypoints feels like a hassle and takes away from its purpose. It provides grid references, but it lacks the additional details that help during quick checks. Overall, it's a decent app, but it requires some improvements before I consider making the switch.

I loved using Viewranger for ages. I didn’t want to spend money on a subscription for an app I’d use only a few times each year. This app has a simple, clean design. I paid $10 for excellent map coverage, and within 15 minutes, I was out jogging in new areas, tracking my route easily. It has everything I need. After my hike, I found myself wishing for extra stats like total elevation, but that didn’t stop me from giving it a five-star review.

You need to pay for maps on every device linked to your account. Each one requires its own payment. Enjoying maps across different platforms brings extra costs.

Downloading map sections is simple and quick. The route planning function, though, falls short. It throws in odd loops instead of a straight path. This makes it tough to plan your route accurately and figure out the total walking distance. This flaw really dampens what could have been an outstanding alternative to the ONS app.

You get topographic maps along with stunning high-resolution LINZ aerial imagery. This beats the low-resolution or satellite images found in many other topo map apps. Just download the region you plan to explore before leaving Wi-Fi or data coverage, and you're all set for your adventures.
