How Rosetta Stone works

Rosetta Stone has been helping millions of people learn languages for over 30 years. Start speaking a new language within minutes using our research-backed method! Our lessons immerse you in the language with real-world images and scenarios, so you learn faster and retain more.

The Rosetta Stone method

Rosetta Stone's Dynamic Immersion method enables you to tap into your innate ability to learn language. By mirroring the way you first acquired language as a child, Dynamic Immersion provides maximum exposure to your new language through audio spoken by native speakers, written words, and real-world images. You'll use visual and conceptual clues to help you interpret the meaning of new words, phrases, and sentences rather than relying on translations and rote memorization. Dynamic Immersion is a research-based approach to effective language learning that allows you to build a deeper, more enduring understanding of your new language.

With Rosetta Stone, you'll start speaking your new language right away—during your very first lesson! And our bite-sized lessons make progressing easy, even if you only have 5 minutes.

What you'll learn with Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone

Speaking and Pronunciation

With Rosetta Stone lessons, you start speaking your new language instantly. Each lesson starts with key vocabulary, which you'll be asked to speak aloud. As you practice, TruAccent, our proprietary speech recognition software, compares your pronunciation to native speakers and offers immediate feedback. This means you'll learn how well you're saying each word, in addition to learning the word itself. At the end of each unit, you will complete a Milestone. In this speaking activity, you will have a two-way conversation with a pre-recorded native speaker, giving you the chance to practice a real-world conversation in a supportive environment.

Rosetta Stone

Listening Comprehension

As you work through lessons, you will hear words and phrases spoken aloud by native speakers and be asked to choose the image that corresponds. This immersive learning experience will help you to learn the language intuitively through imagery and reasoning instead of rote memorization as you build your listening skills.

Rosetta Stone

Reading and Writing

Rosetta Stone lessons take a scaffolded approach so that as you progress through content, the vocabulary and grammar you are learning increases in complexity. You will start by learning common words, then move gradually through simple phrases, and finally to complete sentences and ideas. Since all of this happens in your new language, there is no need for translation or memorization—instead you'll be reading in the language right away. And with Stories and writing prompts, you are able to apply what you've learned through structured immersion, building ever-increasing reading and writing abilities in your new language.

What Language Do They Speak in Belgium?

Rosetta Stone

Belgium may be a relatively small nation, but it is among the most complex linguistic landscapes in Europe. So, what language do they speak in Belgium? Dutch, French, and German, although there are many minority language groups that fill out Belgium’s population.

Rather than unifying under a single tongue, Belgium is divided into distinct language regions. These regions revolve around the official languages of Belgium. Each region enjoys the freedom to preserve its unique traditions and manage its own institutions accordingly. Explore the diverse official and unofficial languages of Belgium like Belgian French, and learn about the history behind the language-rich nation.

What is Belgium’s official language?

The government of Belgium recognizes three official languages:

Flemish/Dutch

French

German

Not only do Belgians speak one of these three languages as their mother tongue but they often also speak one of them as a second language.

Around 55% of the population speaks Dutch as their mother tongue, 36% speak French, and German is mostly spoken as a second language by around one quarter of the population.

How many languages are spoken in Belgium?

Around 17 languages are spoken in Belgium, consisting of three officially recognized languages, historically native Belgian tongues and dialects, new forms of communication from labor migration and globalism, as well as unique sign languages developed by the Flemish and Wallonian communities.

Historical and native Belgian languages

Several small dialectal communities have historically called Belgium home. These are a combination of religiously centered communities, such as in the case of the Yiddish-speaking Belgians, along with Romantic and Germanic dialects.

Yiddish

Luxembourgish

Walloon

Picard

Limburgish

Champenois

Lorrain

New, unofficial languages of Belgium

The expansion of globalism has inspired over half the population of Belgium to learn English as a second language to the extent of conversational proficiency. Otherwise, labor immigration from 1940 to 1970 to Belgian industries brought with it the languages of:

Arabic

Italian

Turkish

Belgian Sign Languages

Hearing-impaired citizens of Belgium have formed two of their own sign language systems, tied to the language regions of the nation:

Vlaamse Gebarentaal (VGT, Flemish Sign Language)

Langue des Signes Française de Belgique (LSFB, French Belgian Sign Language)

Because of the small community of native German-speaking Belgians, the deaf community in eastern Germanic cantons have not formed their own sign language, opting to use German Sign Language or Flemish Sign Language instead.

I really enjoy the app and the content it offers. Unfortunately, it crashes a lot. Logging in becomes a hassle after closing the app too. There are times when I just can’t download the material at all.

I was happily using the app and enjoyed it a lot. I even decided to grab the lifetime membership. Suddenly, it became incompatible with my device. Such a frustrating situation!

Sounds great! Focusing on speaking and listening can really boost your skills. You could try conversations with friends or language partners. Listening to podcasts or music in English helps too. Watching movies or shows in English provides context. Practicing with interactive apps makes learning fun. Joining conversation clubs or online forums offers real-life practice. Engaging in discussions brings confidence. Keep it dynamic, and enjoy the journey!

Frustration creeps in. Logging into the app feels like a victory, but as soon as I click on a lesson, nothing happens. My computer struggles with reliability, so I hoped this app would be my solution. Now it seems more like a roadblock than help. Time slips away, and I feel stuck. Disappointment settles in.

The sign-in screen is frustrating. I enter my username and password, but there’s no "login" button. It feels like hitting a wall. Just doesn’t work at all.

It's so annoying! The app keeps glitching, and I can't get past the same lesson. I try answering, but it just freezes up. I was super excited to dive into these courses, and now I'm just feeling frustrated.

I gave two stars because I faced a speaking issue in the app. I speak clearly, but it struggles to recognize me. Also, I wish I could access lessons offline, even after downloading them. I hope these problems get fixed soon. Thanks for your patience!
