FAQ
1. Why are you not broadcasting Garmisch-Partenkirchen this year?
This year, NOS has chosen to broadcast the NK marathon skating completely live and not to switch to the ski jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The NK marathon is an important skating tournament in which the national titles are contested for both men and women. It is an important tournament that can count on a lot of interest from our audience.
Although ski jumping is a tradition on New Year's Day, we have to make choices in what we broadcast, just like with other sports. After all, every euro can only be spent once. That is why we looked at various aspects, such as the popularity of the sport in the Netherlands, the lack of Dutch participants in ski jumping and the other sporting events that take place that day.
In addition, the viewing figures show that interest in ski jumping in the Netherlands is decreasing.
2. Why is there less airtime for the Paralympic Games than for the ‘regular’ Games?
The Paralympic Games are smaller in scale than the Olympic Games, both in terms of the number of participants (over 4,000 vs. over 10,000), the number of sports (22 vs. 32) and the duration of the event (12 vs. 17 days). It is therefore a different event and that requires a different approach.
Nevertheless, development is not standing still. This year, NOS is paying more attention to the Paralympic Games than ever before. We offer a late night program, several daily live streams with Dutch commentary, and have analysts, experts and reporters on site. All competitions with Dutch participants can be followed live via NOS.nl and the NOS app. At important moments, such as finals with Dutch Paralympians, we will also broadcast these competitions live on television as much as possible.
All in all, this ensures that we can increasingly give the Paralympic Games the attention they deserve.
3. Why is there no live blog / separate web page / medal table for the Paralympic Games?
We believe it is important for the Paralympic Games to explain more about a specific sport or to pay attention to the story of an athlete. That is why we focus on other forms of reporting, such as live streams, news stories on the spot and extensive programs. We do not have a page for the Paralympic Games, but we do have a separate collection with all the latest news, videos and live streams.
All competitions with Dutch participants can be followed live via NOS.nl and the NOS app. At important moments, such as finals with Dutch Paralympians, we will also broadcast these competitions live on television as much as possible. We choose to show as much as possible live, or to summarize later in NOS Studio Para Paris, a late night program of approximately 50 minutes.
