Overview
Music Tutor Sight Read Lite is an educational app aimed at helping learners develop note-reading skills quickly and accurately. Through quizzes, it shows musical notes on a staff and asks users to identify or place them correctly. It offers a variety of modes—timed tests for speed, study mode without time pressure, and a “learn” mode to preview correct answers. You can choose note naming systems (English, Italian solfège, German) and tailor time limits (including none). It supports both phones and tablets in portrait or landscape. Many users praise its simplicity, its helpful tutorial, and how effective it is for mastering basic sight-reading before advancing.
Enhance your music reading skills with MusicTutor SightRead (MTSR). This engaging quiz game is crafted specifically for music learners, making the process of reading and writing music both fun and easy.
* Gameplay Overview
MTSR features various games that all operate under a similar format:
1) A question is presented on a display panel (question panel).
2) The user provides an answer using a separate panel (answer panel). If the answer is correct, a sound indicating success plays; if incorrect, a failure sound is played.
The following games are available:
1) Read staff: The program displays a staff on the question panel along with a note positioned on it. The user must respond using a keyboard.
2) Write staff: A note name appears in the question panel. The user must position the note correctly on the staff displayed in the answer panel by dragging it to the right height.
* Game Modes
1) Timed tests: Within a specified duration, the user answers questions. Both correct and incorrect responses are tracked, and at the end of the time limit, a score reflecting performance is presented.
2) Study: Users can reply to questions without time constraints. In this setting, the "Learn" button becomes available, altering the behavior of the program.
3) Learn: By tapping the answer panel, users can view the questions (or multiple questions) corresponding to the selected answer.
* Timing Options
The duration of the game can be customized. Selecting "0" removes the time restriction, enabling "Learn" mode.
Results from past tests can also be accessed.
* Notation Systems
- English (C, D, E, F, G, A, B)
- Italian (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si)
- German (C, D, E, F, G, A, H)
MTSR is designed to function seamlessly in any screen orientation (portrait or landscape) and across various device sizes (smartphones or tablets). Assistance is also provided.

User feedback
--Many users find the app “simple yet effective,” especially for learning to quickly recognize notes in the treble clef.
--Some say the free (Lite) version helps them build a foundation but plan to upgrade to the paid/full version to access more features.
--One user appreciates the tutorial mode in the Lite version and looks forward to using timed mode more once comfortable.
--A request from some users: allow filtering to restrict note‐range by instrument (so they don’t see notes they won’t use) to make practice more relevant.
