How can I log in using the DigiD app?

You can log in to the DigiD app in two different ways:

1.You can log in on your mobile phone or tablet by simply entering a pin code.

2.Alternatively, you can log in on a computer through the app by capturing a verification code, scanning a QR code, and then inputting your pin code.

DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY

The DigiD app collects certain data including the IP address, operating system name and version of your device, the unique identifier of the mobile device, your mobile number, and the 5-digit PIN code you create. For identity verification, additional details like document number or driver's license number, date of birth, and validity period are also processed.

By downloading and utilizing the DigiD app, you consent to this data processing under the established provisions.

1.Your personal information will be handled in compliance with relevant privacy laws. The privacy statement outlines who is accountable for managing personal data within DigiD, which types of user data are collected, and their purpose. The rules governing the handling, security, and reliability of DigiD are defined in legislation. Further details can be found in the privacy documentation.

2.Appropriate technical and organizational measures have been implemented to protect against the loss or unlawful processing of users' personal information.

3.The DigiD app adheres to security standards that align with those of DigiD itself, utilizing the security features available within the operating system.

4.Users bear the responsibility for ensuring the security of their mobile devices.

5.Occasionally, updates for the DigiD app may be automatically downloaded and installed from the app store. These updates are designed to enhance, expand, or upgrade the functionality of the app, addressing any bugs, adding advanced features, or introducing new versions. Without these updates, the app may not operate effectively.

6.The provider reserves the right to (temporarily) withdraw the DigiD app from the app store or suspend its operation without prior notice.

Digisterker

Would you like to learn how to apply for a DigiD or how to use the DigiD app? Many libraries offer a Digisterker course to learn how to deal with government websites and DigiD. This course is for anyone with some internet experience. Even if you are not a member of the library.

The course usually consists of 4 sessions of 2 hours and is taught by specially trained teachers. In the course you will learn how to request, activate and use a DigiD (app).

Authorisation

Do you need help to arrange matters with the government online, such as your tax return or rent surcharge. You can give someone else permission to do so, by means of DigiD Authorisation.

Please note! Never give your DigiD login credentials to someone else, but use DigiD Authorisation.

Who can you authorise?

People, such as a family member or a social worker.

Companies, such as your tax advisor.

You give someone permission (authorisation) for a specific task, for example a tax return, and for a fixed period, for example a year. The person you authorise will then only have access to this specific data only for that period.

It is possible to authorise several people.

How does it work?

If you would like someone else to take care of your affairs, you can request an authorisation code for this person.

Have you received an authorisation code? Then contact the person who is going to help you. Give that person the following details:

No DigiD

You have no DigiD? You can also apply for authorisation without DigiD by telephone via the DigiD helpdesk. You will then receive the authorisation code at the address registered in the Dutch Personal Records Database.

    It may take some time, but it does function effectively at times. This security control covers all your government-related tasks, similar to what an SMS could achieve. An app would simplify this process, yet that's not the case here.

    The rework on this app truly stands out. It’s impressive and deserves recognition. As a fellow developer, I see how well it runs on all sorts of devices, both new and older ones. This wasn't always the case. The performance has seen a remarkable boost. The addition of the QR mechanism is a fantastic touch!

    The app keeps freezing right after I enter the PIN. I’ve killed it multiple times, but nothing changes. Cleared the cache and now I have to log in again. I can’t remember my password, so I need to recover it. The recovery link doesn’t work either, just gives a server error. This is frustrating! Typical of government IT solutions, isn’t it?

    The app needs to scan NFC for ID validation, but it doesn’t ask for NFC permission. The result? Total failure. Even more frustrating, this is now the only way to log into health insurance, yet I can’t make it work. If I could give zero stars, I would. To add to the problem, the response doesn’t even reflect reality. SMS isn’t a valid two-factor authentication method. Phone number transfers can happen through COIN with minimal checks. The real issue? DigiD still hasn’t adopted a secure industry standard like mOTP. That’s where the frustration lies.

    Setting up the app on a new phone feels frustrating. The start-up drags on, and I just want to get it done. First step, login goes fine. Step two hits a wall. Selecting a pin code brings up an error message: "The DigiD app temporarily does not allow you to scan identity documents." That message doesn’t connect to choosing a pin at all. It blocks progress completely, preventing me from reaching the optional third step about scanning ID. In the Netherlands, this app is almost essential. So please, make it work.

    The NFC Reader in the app causes so much frustration! Living abroad for over 14 years, I opened the app to find an update waiting. After the update, it needed reactivation. This process requires scanning my passport with NFC. But the NFC reading fails repeatedly. I’ve tried over 50 times, still no luck. There’s another option to activate through SMS, but it needs a Dutch mobile number, which I don’t have. Adding a number to my account requires a Dutch address, and that's also out of reach. I feel completely stuck because of this poor programming. So annoying! 😡

    Frustration builds with the app's update request. Clicking on the update redirects to the store without a simple update button in sight. Every other app has that button right where it's expected. Instead, only options to uninstall or open appear. Automatic updates are set, yet nothing changes. Now unable to access necessary features, important tasks hang in limbo. Why complicate things, NL? Just want to login to insurance and government sites without hassle.

    Activating the app is a major hassle. Always running into errors. Adding SMS verification through the website is impossible since I’m not in the Netherlands. My medical dossier is locked behind that verification. Getting a DigID was a struggle due to no nearby counters. Even after getting it, SMS verification rarely came through. Now my phone is better, so activation and verification should be possible. This issue needed fixing long ago.
