Berichtenbox - Message storage & access

The Messages Box app can only be used in combination with the DigiD app. The DigiD app must be on the same device, and you use the PIN code from the DigiD app to open the Messages Box app.

With the app, you have access to the inbox, archive, and trash bin of your Messages Box on MijnOverheid. You can read messages and move them to the archive or trash. If a message has an attachment, you can forward, save, or open it in another app. In the app, you can see which new organizations have started using the Messages Box and indicate whether these organizations may send digital mail to you. Currently, it is not possible to adjust your preferences for organizations that are already connected. To do this, you can log in to the website mijn.overheid.nl.

Here are some tips for effectively using the Berichtenbox, the Dutch government's digital mailbox:

Use the Berichtenbox App: Download the Berichtenbox app for Android or Apple devices for faster notifications and easier access using a PIN after the initial DigiD login. The app provides a secure and efficient way to access your government mail.

Enable Notifications: During the installation of the app, allow notifications to ensure you don't miss important messages. You can also adjust notification settings in your phone or tablet’s settings menu.

Set up Email Alerts: To receive an email notification when you have a new message, log in to MijnOverheid, go to 'Instellingen' (settings), enter your email address, and switch on alerts for new messages and reminders.

Keep Your Email Address Updated: If you opt to receive email notifications, ensure your email address is current to avoid missing important correspondence.

Check Regularly: Regularly check your Berichtenbox for new messages. Even with notifications, it's a good practice to check periodically.

Understand Organization Preferences: You can choose which organizations send you digital post via the Berichtenbox in the settings, but you can’t remove the Belastingdienst (Tax and Customs Administration).

Manage Messages: Use the app or website to manage your messages. You can move messages to the archive or trash. Be aware that if you delete a message from the trash, you cannot retrieve it.

Secure Access: Always log in to the Berichtenbox using DigiD. The Berichtenbox app requires the DigiD app for full functionality and secure login.

Be Cautious of Internet Freedom: Be aware of potential security risks in countries with limited internet freedom.

Contact the Sender for Questions: If you have a question about a message in your Berichtenbox, contact the organization that sent the message.

Provide Feedback: The Dutch government enhances and improves the app based on user needs.

Alternative for Paper Mail: If you prefer paper mail, you can turn off the digital option (except for the Tax and Customs Administration) and request paper mail from the Belastingdienst.

DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY

When you use the Messages Box app from MijnOverheid, certain personal data is processed. During login, your Citizen Service Number (BSN) is sent to MijnOverheid via DigiD. To display the data from your MijnOverheid account in the Messages Box app, a notification token, a user token, and an encrypted token are used.

By using the Messages Box app, you agree to this processing, which also applies to the provisions below.

• User's personal data is processed following the General Data Protection Regulation and the privacy policy on the MijnOverheid website (mijn.overheid.nl/privacy). Rules on the processing of personal data by MijnOverheid are included in the Decision on processing personal data in the generic digital infrastructure. Rules on the operation, security, and reliability of MijnOverheid are included in the Regulation on GDI facilities (mijn.overheid.nl/wet-en-regelgeving).

• MijnOverheid (part of Logius) has implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures against loss or unauthorized processing of the user's personal data.

• The Messages Box app meets security measures comparable to those of the MijnOverheid website. The app also utilizes the security mechanisms of the operating system.

• The user is responsible for the security of their mobile device.

• Updates for the Messages Box app may occasionally be downloaded and installed through the app store. These updates are intended to improve, expand, or further develop the Messages Box app and may include solutions for program errors, advanced features, new software modules, or entirely new versions. Without these updates, it is possible that the Messages Box app may not function properly.

• MijnOverheid (part of Logius) reserves the right to discontinue offering the Messages Box app in the app store or suspend the operation of the Messages Box app without giving reasons.
