The Highway Code for Dyslexia
People with dyslexia, dysphasia, or dyspraxia often encounter specific obstacles in their learning, including when preparing for the Highway Code test. These disorders, known as "DYS," require adapted teaching approaches to maximize their chances of success. Aware of these challenges, we created the very first online Highway Code training course specifically designed for people with Dyslexia.

Difficulties for people with Dyslexia with the Highway Code
When we talk about "DYS" disorders, we are referring to a fairly well-known trio: dyslexia, dysphasia, and dyspraxia. Other disorders such as dysorthographia or dyscalculia can lead to difficulties learning the Highway Code.
Each of these disorders affects learning ability differently, but they have one thing in common: they complicate school and educational life.
Think about what it takes to pass the Highway Code test: reading signs quickly, understanding complex scenarios, and remembering tons of rules. For someone with a DYS disorder, each step can become a challenge. The long texts, the need for quick reactions, and the subtleties of the questions can turn what is already difficult into something almost insurmountable.
People with dyslexia have difficulty reading and understanding written instructions quickly. When faced with multiple-choice questions and road signs, this can become a real challenge. Learning the Highway Code in the traditional way with a book or endless text represents a real obstacle to learning.
Dysphasia affects the ability to understand and produce coherent spoken language. This can make assimilating driving rules particularly complex.
Dyspraxia impacts coordination and movement. People with dyspraxia encounter several obstacles when taking their Highway Code test, including difficulty concentrating and visualizing from above. They also have difficulty reading the question while looking at the corresponding image, and the response time is often too short for them.
How can someone with dyslexia learn the Highway Code? Current Solutions
Current solutions? Well, they're not exactly suitable. Imagine having to understand the Highway Code through a 200-page book or lectures in blocks of text.
For someone with dyslexia, it's like trying to read using a mirror. What's needed is an approach that emphasizes visuals, interaction, and breaks down information into small, easily digestible chunks.
Yet, until recently, if you had dyslexia, finding online training tailored to your specific needs was impossible:
📖 Reading difficulties
😔 Comprehension problems
🤷 Attention difficulties
🧠 Memory problems
👀 Visual processing difficulties
Added to this are two major obstacles: anxiety and lack of confidence.
But here at Code en poche, we've decided to change that 😉
A course specially designed for people with Dyslexia
Code en poche, with the help of the CEREMH (French National Centre for Health and Medical Research) and the support of the BPI (French Public Information Bureau), has created the first online course specifically designed for people with Dyslexia disorders.
We've created an easy-to-follow 14-day method, enhanced with memory tips and designed for people with Dyslexia and those who can't pass the test.
🤹 A step-by-step 14-day method: you know what to do and when.
🎬 All courses are video-based: no need to read, just listen.
⌚ No more than 1 hour of lessons per day: that way, you stay focused.
👨🏫 In-depth explanations: we (really) explain the important concepts.
Dyslexia disorders recognized for taking a modified Highway Code test
Dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dysphasia are officially recognized disorders, and the Highway Code test can be adapted for these candidates.
To do this, you must be able to provide one of the following documents:
Recognition of a RQTH (Regional Qualified Teacher Training) or MDPH (Regional Director of Public Health) with a diagnosis of a DYS disorder
Recognition of an adjustment to the national education exams for a DYS disorder
A medical certificate less than 6 months old, prescribed by a doctor, attesting to a DYS disorder requiring adjustments to the general theory test (General Theory Test = Highway Code)
If you are eligible, you will be able to have the instructions read aloud by an inspector and additional time to answer questions, thus providing you with optimal conditions for success.
However, the option of taking the Highway Code test with an adjustment is not currently offered in all departments of France. To find out if your department offers an adaptation, you can contact your department's Road Safety Office (BER).
Finally, remember that learning the Highway Code when you have DYS is not a dead end. With the right resources, a little tailored support, and a lot of determination, getting a driver's license is no longer a distant dream.
We've paved the way with a training course designed for you, hoping that more and more programs will follow this path. Because ultimately, the road should be accessible to everyone, regardless of the obstacles 😊
