2024 US Open celebrates AAPI community with a tennis clinic, cultural performances

The 2024 US Open kicked off Fan Week with a celebration of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, hoping to amplify AAPI voices and inspire the next generation of change-makers and athletes.

As soon as the gates opened on the first day of Fan Week, New York City’s Chinatown Young Lions Dance Group performed a traditional lion dance and dragon dance to welcome fans to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and bring good luck to the tournament. The dancers weaved their way through the grounds, delighting and entertaining onlookers before arriving at the Fountain Plaza Stage, where a team of drummers awaited them to add a soundtrack to the choreography. USTA executives including CEO Lew Sherr, US Open Tournament Director Stacey Allaster and USTA President and Chairman of the Board Brian Hainline joined in the fun festivities, feeding the dancing lions and a dragon tennis balls, along with Chinese-American WTA player Ann Li, who competes in the US Open Qualifying Tournament this week.

“It's my home Slam, I'm super excited to be doing this,” Li said. “It's funny, because I'm actually a dragon because people born in 2000 are dragons [according to the Chinese zodiac], so when I heard about this, I was super excited. It's a dragon year this year, so hopefully this can bring me some good luck and hopefully this US Open goes well.”

Even more fun awaited fans on the first day of the US Open, from performances on the Fan Week Stage featuring tai chi and traditional Chinese ribbon dances to an AAPI community tennis clinic in the Play Tennis Zone, where visitors of all ages and skill levels could pick up a racquet and work on their groundstrokes—or learn to play for the first time.

Watson Tanlamai brought his three young children to the grounds, and the four family members enjoyed the Play Tennis Zone activation together. He said they’ve been excited all year to return to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center after previous visits during Fan Week—Tanlamai estimates this is his tenth time at the US Open, and he keeps coming back for the competition, community and atmosphere. Tanlamai appreciates the health and wellness benefits of tennis, and his kids have started playing as well.

“I think tennis is one of the few sports you can actually play as you age,” he said. “I just turned 40 this year, I've been playing tennis for over 30 years. I started my daughter when she was four, started my son now that he is four, and I just think it's a sport that you can really grow with.”

Board members and volunteers from the Asian American and Pacific Islander Tennis Association (AAPITA), an organization created by former US Open doubles champion Vania King in 2022 to increase AAPI representation in tennis, were on hand to help with the events. Lopa Zielinski was one of AAPITA board members enjoying the activities, and she said she couldn’t have imagined a community event like this when she was growing up in the USTA Eastern section as the daughter of Indian immigrants.

“AAPI Amplified is a true testament to the USTA for the support they have provided to the community in providing this platform, literally the world's largest stage for tennis,” she said. The events also show “an understanding of true representation of all the different ethnicities and cultures that are actually in the draws, from juniors through the pros. I think [it's] pretty remarkable that kids get to see others on the court that look like them, and others get to see who's playing tennis at every level.”

So frustrating! My Galaxy S7 won’t install the app. It keeps showing this message, “Sorry, error at our end. Try again.” I can access it through Google Play, but it’s such a hassle. What a pain!

The app has become a bit slow while trying to cover everything. Despite that, it remains the best app out there.

Updates came to a halt on September 5. Before that, trying to navigate was frustrating and pointless. I decided to uninstall it. Needed to clear space for something actually useful.

I had an amazing time at the U.S. Open! The app made everything so easy. I scanned my tickets right from my phone to get into the park every day. No stress at all! I also enjoyed the scavenger hunt and earning badges. Such a fun experience! The app was super user friendly.
