Women's Cycling Coverage, Part 2

Allan Padgett

Jan 17

Clara and I wanted to share some information about the state of women's coverage in our Tour Tracker Pro Cycling app. This is a topic we discuss every season, and a topic our users ask about often.

To start, let us say that we do care about women's cycling and have provided coverage of the women's peloton in some form for the last 10 years. That has included providing free custom apps for women's races, providing an app for Tour de France Femmes in select countries, and when possible including coverage within our main app. We have both have close friends who race, and Clara is past US national champion cyclist.

The challenge, however, is resources. Tour Tracker is just Clara and me. I do the development. She covers the races. And while I can do my part in adding more races to the calendar, ultimately Clara is just one reporter working crazy hours to cover the races we can. And even if she could duplicate herself, as mentioned in a previous blog entry, getting the detailed data our apps need has proven impossible for most women's races.

For 2025 we thought we had an ideal solution and have been working on it since the middle of last year. Specifically, we agreed to build a dedicated women's app for a group that intended to cover the entire women's season. We were doing this at no charge, and the app was looking great. But in December they backed out and we were left with a beautiful app with no data.

So for this year we are going back to what we have been doing for the past 4 years and covering the races that provide good data and for which Clara is available. We know this isn't the answer people want to hear, but it is the best we can achieve with our very limited resources. We will continue to look for partners who want to use our platform, however.

Thanks for reading this and thanks for your support.

Coffee For Clara

Allan Padgett

Aug 7, 2023

Anyone who has used Tour Tracker Grand Tours knows Clara Beard. She has been doing the live commentary for the app since the beginning. Clara's insightful play-by-play of every race we cover is the heart and soul of the app.

Unfortunately as we have expanded from 3 races to over 20, the cost of the purchasing and distributing the data the app needs (routes, rosters, GPS, results) has gone up correspondingly, while the number of paying customers has not. So Clara is working 7x harder without the app bringing us any more money at the end of the day...

So as of today, I have added a feature to the apps called Coffee For Clara. It is a chance for users to voluntarily send Clara a small thank you as often as they like. 100% of the profits of this will go to Clara for coffee, beer or however she wants to hydrate herself. Or a taco.

Of course most users understandably feel they already pay for the app, and please don't feel obligated to do anything. But if you love what she does and think that we charge a reasonable amount for what the app does, send her a coffee occasionally!

As an added incentive to show Clara some love, I'm going to raffle off some of my - unused - jerseys I have collected from races I have worked with. To enter, email a screenshot of your phone showing the "purchase complete" message to info@thetourtracker.com!

Thanks, Allan

And here is a photo of your favorite cycling reporter on the job!

I've been using this app since it first came out. Watching all the races live would be great, but this app is definitely worth it for real-time updates, stats, and information on breaks, routes, as well as rider and team details. I always have it on my phone while I'm working at my desk.

The app works well most of the time. It crashes whenever I try to cast to my TV. That makes me doubt how well that feature handles things. Sometimes, the app just won't update for me either.

Awesome resource for following the Tour de France! So much useful information, really well organized. It complements the TV coverage perfectly while also standing strong on its own. After trying the demo, I decided to go for the live coverage. Definitely worth the money!

The details you want pop up in a fantastic user interface. Users have relied on it for years, and it just keeps improving. The developer clearly puts so much heart into this project. Perfect when standing by the road, waiting for the cyclists. Great as a sidekick during TV viewing too.

It provides all the essentials to keep up with the major races and plenty of others. It's a lifesaver when I can't catch a live broadcast. Now, I've also developed a strong interest in the fantasy cycling game!

I have to say, this deserves high praise. The maps and route profiles are clear. The live ticker updates quickly. The user interface is comprehensive, which is impressive given how much information it offers. The subscription fee feels reasonable for such quality. A special mention goes to the Cycling Dictionary and the variety of language options!
