Introducing the New GPS Experience on TheGrint: Built for the Way You Play Golf

TheGrint

For years, GPS has been the backbone of golf apps. It’s what players open first when they get to the course. It’s how they make smarter decisions, pick the right club, and avoid trouble.

But there are some common problems we've learned from talking to our users when it comes to not only our own GPS, but across golf apps in general:

·The GPS is too cluttered - theres usually a lot going on, because golf apps just layer on more and more tools and theres only so much space for them on a phone

·Users have different preferences - some users want a minimal display to focus on just the map, others want every tool and data point, and many fall somewhere in between

And this one-size-fits-all approach of just adding more stuff for every user is not the answer.

Years ago, simply having GPS in a golf app at a majority of courses was a game changer. Today, having a GPS is expected. And yet, no one has taken the time to rethink what GPS could really be.

So we set out to do just that.

We completely re-imagined GPS from the ground up. And it is LIVE in the app now once you update to our latest version.

For context: Why GPS matters

Every shot starts with good information. A great GPS helps you:

·See the hole before you play it

·Avoid hazards, bunkers, trees, and trouble spots

·Choose the right club off the tee

·Set up better approach shots

·Play smarter with real course management

That’s why GPS is the number one feature golfers rely on during a round. And our GPS works great across 40k+ golf courses around the world.

What makes TheGrint's new GPS different?

Think of how you set up your phone. You choose your apps. You arrange them how you want. It reflects how you live. Now imagine being forced to use the same apps and layout on your phone as everyone else! That’s how GPS has worked in golf apps for years.

With TheGrint’s new GPS, you can now personalize everything. Choose the tools, widgets, and features you actually use. Leave out the rest.

The result is an experience that’s fast, modern, and tailored to your game. This is a major step forward for golf apps and raises the bar for what GPS should feel like.

How It Works

When you open GPS on TheGrint, you’ll immediately notice a fresh, modern interface.

On the right side of the screen, tap the "+" button on the GPS Toolbar. This is where the magic happens.

This opens up a drawer where you can customize your:

·Widgets - Stackable information blocks on the left hand side

·Tools - Interactive shortcuts to additional tools that overlay onto the map

·Settings - Preferences about how the GPS should behave

Lets unpack each of these below.

TheGrint

‍By the way, we completely re-imagined the entire Shot Tracker, making it way more intuitive and modern. Track shots like never before, see 3D parabolas of your tracked shots (great for sharing to social media or in group chats with friends), and edit or discard shots as needed. It also syncs with the Smartwatch app so if you track shots there, you'll see them here.

TheGrint

Settings

·Auto-Open Green Map (Pro) – Automatically open the green map when you approach the green or when you are on it

·More to come soon - Stay tuned ;)

TheGrint's GPS 2.0 enables you to set up the GPS to the way YOU like to use it. Ignore the clutter and stop being distracted by the endless bells and whistles that are normally shoved on top of your screen, or dial in the tools and widgets that fit your needs.

Your setup will be saved so each time you fire up the app, it looks and behaves how you left it. And you can change this at any time and it will save automatically.

FAQS

Why is there a Combined Score in my scores list?

In January of 2024, the World Handicap System updated its methodology to allow for 9 hole rounds, or partial rounds (10-17 holes) to be submitted for your scoring record. TheGrint now supports this change with our WHS integrated Handicap partners, including the USGA.

If you see a Combined Score in your scoring record, it is from a process that is done by the USGA, automatically. Up until January 16th 2024, every two 9-hole Scores you upload to your TheGrint account, the system will combine them and add the Score to your Scores list as an 18-hole Score. It will be shown as Combined ( C ).

This is a Rule set by the World Handicap System. For more information, check out the USGA Rules Book (here), Rule 5.1b. Combined Scores can’t be deleted. If there is a mistake with one of the 9-holes used on the Combined Score, the 9-hole Score itself is the one that has to be deleted. When one of the 9-hole scores is deleted the following happens:

1 - The Combined Score is deleted both in the WHS and in TG.

2 - The "widow" score is now alone and if it's still eligible (within the time frame of the last 20 scores) the system will try to match it. If there's one 9-hole score waiting for a match they will be automatically matched. If there is no one pending, then the widow score stays as pending waiting for the next score to combine.

What can I do if a golf course scorecard or information is outdated?

There are two things you can do:

1 - You can use the Course Update Tool through our Website to update the information you saw we have outdated. You can find this link by going to Courses on the Top Menu, then click on “Can’t find a Course?” Next, click on “Edit A Course” Search for the Course, and, lastly, click on “Edit Golf Course Info” or Edit Scorecard”.

We will revise the information you update and we will Approve it (or we may disapprove it) as soon as we are able to Verify the information.

2 - You can send us an e-mail to Courses@thegrint.com with the Name and Location of the Golf Course we need to update. If you have their current Scorecard with you, we would appreciate it very much if you could take a picture of it and attach it to the e-mail you send us. We will update the Course as soon as possible.

Is the Adjusted Gross Score calculated automatically when I upload a Score?

Short answer, yes!

If you upload the Score hole-by-hole (or through SPS), the ESC, now called Adjusted Gross Score (Max Score/Net Double Bogey) is calculated automatically, based on your Course Handicap.

The formula is: Par + 2 strokes + any Handicap strokes received on the Hole. If you upload the Total Score, you would have to calculate the Adjusted Gross Score yourself and upload that instead of the Gross Score.

You can see the Adjusted Gross Score on the Website (only), below the Score (hole-by-hole) when you view your Scorecard. You do not need to adjust it manually when you upload it Hole-by-hole or through SPS, the system will do it automatically for you.

Why is my Handicap not updating?

There might be a few reasons why your Handicap is not updating or not showing what you think you have as a Handicap Index.

The first thing you have to know is that Handicaps are revised every night, at midnight.

Secondly, Handicaps are calculated using the lowest 8 Handicap Differentials out of your last 20 scores. It is NOT calculated using your Scoring Average.

To learn more about how the Handicap is calculated, you can go to our Blog and read the Handicap Article here. You can also send us an email at contactus@thegrint.com and we will check your account to be sure it is updating correctly.

I don't want anyone to see my Scores or my Personal Information.

That’s no problem. You can make your whole account Private. HOWEVER, your Scores and Handicap will be visible for anyone who searches for your Name or GHIN#/Handicap ID#, within the Handicap Lookup tool. They won't see more than that.

If Grinters that are not your Friends, search for you within the Friends' feature on the App or Website, they will only see your full name and Handicap, but no scores listed there or any of your personal information.

Your Scores and Handicap are visible within the Handicap lookup because of Handicap Revisions and for peer review. To make your account Private, go to your Profile:

Within the App, go to Personal Info and turn OFF the Public Profile button. Within the Website, Go to your Profile. Go to Preferences and turn OFF the Public Profile button.

For further questions, don't hesitate to email us at contactus@thegrint.com

How can I stop a live round? Am I able to resume it afterwards?

Yes! You can. You can Pause & Exit the Round from the Score tracker menu (top left nine dots) or close the App during the Round.

By doing that the Round will be saved in the Unfinished Round list, which is on the Play button, on the App. From that list you can tap on that Score, complete it and upload it to your Account. OR you can delete it from there and not upload it at all.

How does the Scorecard Picture Service work?

The Scorecard Picture Service (SPS) works like this:

Through the Scorecard Picture feature on the App, take a Pic of your Scorecard. Upload it to TheGrint and we do the rest for you!

In order for us to understand what you are writing, make sure to follow our guidelines. They are old-fashioned and very simple, here they are:

To upload a Score through the SPS Service, through the App (Scorecard Picture Service), follow these steps:

Tap on the Plus Symbol at the top of the Home Screen

Tap on Post Score

Tap on Scorecard Picture, and then "Got it!"

Tap on Upload new scorecard

Fill out all the information

Tap Next on the Top Right of the Screen

If you'd like to upload a friend's score on the same scorecard, be sure to add them.

Tap Next on the Top Right of the Screen

From your phone, take a photo of the scorecard or select it from your photo library

Tap on Use Photo

Press & hold the upload button to submit your score. Once it is received, analyzed, and confirmed, it will be placed in queue to upload onto your account.

Click here to see how to write down your Score and Stats when you use the SPS Service.

What does the "Private Upload" option means?

The Private Upload Option you see before you Upload your score (through the App or Website) or on the Upload screen before you Upload your Score, allows you to upload that particular Score to your account and not show the score on your Activity Feed. Meaning that no one will see that you uploaded that Score to your account.

This doesn’t mean that this particular Score won’t count towards your handicap or stats; it will count. And if anyone goes into your Scoring Records, they will be able to see that Private Score listed. We have to show all of your Scores within your Scoring Records for Handicap purposes.

Can you transfer my Scores to my TheGrint Account?

Yes, we can! This is how it works:You have two options, you can quickly do it yourself with our import tool. Or we can do it for you

1 - Do it yourself: Import Tool

To import scores, simply Copy/Paste your Scores into the Table. Organize your Table in a Spreadsheet with One Round per Row and Copy/Paste that table to the one on the TheGrint Website. Make sure you input the Course, Tee Box and Date for each Round.

2 - We do it for you! (Only for PRO Members)

If you have the Pro Membership, you could send us the pictures of your Scorecards using the Scorecard Picture Service on the App and we would upload the scores for you. You can read more about the SPS Service in our Blog here.

If you have your Scores on an Excel Sheet, you can send it to Scores@thegrint.com and we will transcribe the scores for you. Just make sure the Scores have the Date, Tees, Course (Name and location) and the Score of course.

If you have the Scores on another service and you want to transfer them to your TheGrint account, email us at scores@thegrint.com requesting this and we will send you the guidelines for us to do this.

Updated review: Things have definitely improved. No more jumping holes which is great. However, the watch refuses to sync. All settings are in place for background activity. I’ve tried everything to get the watch and app synced properly, but nothing works. The watch doesn’t update or display anything during an entire round. It’s frustrating having to pull my phone out constantly just to refresh the watch. Would appreciate any tips on the best settings for a smooth experience.
