Letter from the Editor

The Mirror is one of Britain’s most trusted news brands. Since 1903 we have brought words and pictures from the most important world events to millions of readers both in print and, more recently, online. We are committed to reporting the news accurately and with energy and vigour.

The Mirror is known for its strong social conscience. More than a century ago we led the campaign for more lifeboats on ships after the deaths of the poorest on board the Titanic. We campaigned against the ivory trade and seal clubbing and helped create the World Wildlife Fund. Our battle alongside families of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough Disaster changed the course of history. More recently we waged a campaign to save the British steel industry and explored the current homelessness crisis. A change in the law on organ donation, which could save 500 lives every year, is due to come into force in 2020 thanks to our long-running campaign. This has been a huge victory for the Mirror.

And our annual Pride of Britain Awards, celebrating the ordinary people of this country who have achieved extraordinary things, reflects the very best of the Mirror and its values.

Politically the Mirror sits left of centre. It has backed the Labour Party in every election since 1945.

The Mirror has always sought to entertain its readers as well as inform them. Our showbusiness and television coverage is among the best in the industry. We have led the way on dozens of showbiz exclusive stories over the years.

And of course we are the home of sport – particularly football. Our coverage of Premier and lower league clubs is extensive and regularly shapes the sports news agenda.

After a long history of the Mirror in print, we have been proud of the rapid growth of our online operation in recent years. Reporters and writers from print and online work closely together to ensure the very best of our journalism is available to readers however they reach us. Mirror.co.uk also publishes stories from the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People. We also work closely with colleagues at sister Reach PLC titles across Britain and Ireland.

Our mission is to make sense of a rapidly changing world for our readers. To challenge wrongs where we see them. To stand up for the underdog against authority. And to entertain.

We were delighted to be a launch partner of The Trust Project in 2017 as we endeavour to make it simpler for readers of all ages and from all around the world to discover more about who we are and what we believe in.

How our journalists work

Ethics policy

The maintenance of high editorial standards is at the core of the Mirror’s business philosophy.

Reach PLC, the Mirror’s parent company, is a member of and is regulated by IPSO, the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

Our journalists work according to The Editors’ Code of Practice, which sets the benchmark for ethical standards in journalism and is enforced by IPSO. On joining the Mirror, all editorial staff complete a training course in the Code and legal refresher training.

At the Mirror, we recognise that protecting the rights of the individual consistently comes into conflict with the public’s right to know. This means we have to make difficult judgements, sometimes quickly, which are impossible to get right all of the time. Regular bulletins and seminars give staff the best opportunity to learn from mistakes, whether our own or those of other parts of the media industry.

We are a launch partner of The Trust Project, an international initiative to make it easier for readers to find out more about the organisations and the people providing them with news, and to support quality journalism.

Verification and fact checking

We expect our staff to use their best endeavours to verify the stories being put forward for publication.

Unnamed sources

Journalists have an obligation under IPSO’s Editors’ Code of Practice to protect their sources, but we also have a duty to establish that the sources we use are reliable and that material has been appropriately obtained. Story provenance is ultimately the responsibility of the Editor.

When using unnamed sources, the company relies on the integrity, experience and professionalism of its staff.

Corrections Policy

If you believe a story we have published is inaccurate, please contact the editorial team. You can:

If you have an issue about how we have written about you personally or has treated you and wish to make a formal complaint over a potential breach of the Editor's Code of Practice, please see Reach PLC's Complaints Policy and Procedure.

The app needs a lot of improvements. It takes forever to load and open. By the time it finally gets going, there are probably newer news articles available. Error messages pop up all the time, saying articles can't load. It’s frustrating.
