Reflection on 2013
Reflecting based on the 2012 review and 2013 goals.
Work
Using Jenkins at work
I'm using it, but management still feels reliant on others, so I want to delve deeper into various aspects.
Practicing TDD
Barely managed. I generally practice it in personal app development, but I want to apply it more widely.
Seriously managing time
So-so. I feel like I need to try harder.
Read Time Management for Engineers and gained a lot. Since I lent it to a junior, I should buy another copy.
Using a planner
I started using one, and it's improved efficiency, but I still need to balance it with web services. I plan to reread Time Management for Engineers to adjust my personal approach.
Technology
Contributing to AOSP
Failed to do so.
Writing a book
Accomplished. Taking initiative led to opportunities, and despite many hardships, it was successfully published within the year. Writing took about six months, leaving almost no time for other tasks.
Thoroughly utilizing Android open-source libraries
Additionally, participated in the following books published by Mr. Hitsuji of "Tech Booster" at Summer and Winter Comiket:
1 Summer Comiket
Effective Android: Sold out immediately at Summer Comiket, leading to a publication plan with Tatsujin Shuppankai, and finally released in print by Impress Japan. I only contributed two chapters, but engaging in typesetting, cover design, manuscript management, and reviews was extremely educational. By the way, I feel I must do something about "PreVIEW," a real-time preview service for ReVIEW created as a byproduct.
2 Winter Comiket
Misread the trend and wrote a regular article. Should have focused more on 1.5.
Android MagicBook
Wrote about PrintingFramework.
Features of KitKat
Giving a technical talk
Failed to do so.
Developing an OSS library
Created a library called ViewSticker.
Learning more Haskell
Limited progress.
Learning Node.js
Tried various things but still need improvement. Since Google Reader ended, I developed a personal reader called "Goat Reader" using Node.js.
Developing Eclipse plugins
Future focus will be on Android Studio or IntelliJ.
Developing an operating system
Failed to do so.
Learning TypeScript
Limited progress.
Others
Composing music
Goal: 12 songs. Failed—didn't complete any.
Scoring 600 on TOEIC
Failed.
Exercising
Failed.
Jogging
Failed.
2014 Goals
Technical Goals
Get at least one merge in AOSP
Learn LLVM (create at least one frontend or backend module)
Learn Ruby (mainly Rails)
Read 20 technical books
Be active on Stack Overflow (aim for about 100 points)
Update the Aozora Bunko Viewer at least 10 times
Achieve 1 million independent downloads for the Aozora Bunko Viewer
Develop and release about 2 new Android apps
Others
English: Achieve TOEIC 800
Compose 12 songs
Cultivate a morning jogging habit
Exercise regularly
Conclusion
Setting goals for books helped me take concrete actions, making me realize the importance of goals. Reflection is also crucial—I'll value this more. Let's work hard this year too!
