The first step towards social protection began in 1972 where a compensation fund was established under the administration of the Department of Labour, Ministry of Interior, by the Revolutionary Party Notification No. 103, dated 16 March, to provide occupational injury benefit. The fund started its management on 1 January 1974. It covered enterprises that employed at least 20 employees located in Bangkok, before being expanded nation-wide on 1 July 1988.
On 3 September 1990, the Social Security Office was established under the Ministry of Interior. The work related to the provision of social security and compensation fund were then transferred from the Department of Public Welfare and the Department of Labor respectively to the Social Security Office. In the same year, the draft Social Security Act was approved by the National Assembly and came into force on 2 September 1990. Since the inception of the Ministry of Labour in 1993, the Social Security Office has been under its overall direction.
The Social Security Office is now responsible for comprehensive social security schemes which include injury, sickness, death, for both work-related or non-worked related benefits, maternity, old-age, and unemployment benefits.
