General FAQs
Does Slopes back up my data?
Yes! If you create an account within Slopes all of your recordings will be backed up on the Slopes servers, for free. In the future any device you log into will re-download everything you've saved.
While this should enable by default when you create an account, if you would like your activities to be backed up to our server and compare your stats with friends, it's worth double checking that Slopes Cloud Backup is enabled. Here's how:
Go to the Account tab
Tap on Integrations under Settings
Tap on Slopes Cloud Backup → Enable
Where should I put my phone while recording?
If you can, we recommend keeping your phone in an inner jacket pocket where it sits on your chest.
If it's really cold out there don't stick it in an outside pocket, you don't want your phone to freeze. Also, your phone being cold can reduce GPS accuracy, and battery life too.
Just don't put it in your backpack. For your device to reliably receive GPS signal (necessary for Slopes to be able to record your day), it needs to be somewhere where it isn't too obstructed or the signals won't reach it.
How is top speed calculated?
Slopes uses both vertical and horizontal movement to calculate your speed.
Because poor GPS can throw off speeds, Slopes measures a sustaining top speed. In other words, you need to sustain a top speed for a second or two for it to register in the stats. For the vast majority of the time with how people ride, this works out just fine, but if you're cruising at 30mph and zip up to 45 for 2 seconds and then settle back down, it might only register 43 or 44.
This smoothing that Slopes does helps avoid a lot of issues with bad data, but can end up missing quick bursts of speed unfortunately.
When do I need to pause recording?
You should pause recording when you're taking a decent-length break as it will stop using the phone's GPS and save battery life. You'll also want to pause if you're taking any shuttles at the resort - Slopes may mistake that for a lift or run .
Slopes will automatically detect lifts, so don't worry, you shouldn't pause every time you're hopping on one. Unless you're taking a break, just keep recording and Slopes will do its thing.
Does Slopes work without an internet connection?
Slopes can record your day even when you're far away from civilization and cell-phone reception, we just need GPS signal. You'll always get live stats and run breakdowns even when you're offline.
If you haven't been to a resort before, then our auto-detection needs internet to look it up and tag it. However, if you don't have connection when you start recording, Slopes will keep checking and auto-detect/tag the resort when you do get cell reception at some point during the day. If you've been to the resort before, we can use local cached data to detect it for the recording.
Can I use Slopes at any resort?
Slopes has one of the largest resort databases world-wide with over 3,300 resorts, so odds are "yes"!
If Slopes doesn't know about a resort, that's no problem, it won't stop you from recording there. Report it as missing and you'll be able to update your activity with the resort name later.
How do I share my stats on social media?
Sharing your stats on social media via the app is not yet possible on Android.
We hope to add this feature in the near future as we continue working hard towards full feature parity with the iOS app.
