Raiffeisen's Story

The history of the banks of the Raiffeisen Bank International group begins in the middle of the 19th century. For the countries of the German Confederation, it was a time of reforms, destruction of the old order, and fierce competition. The changes were especially painful for farmers: they could not count on state assistance, and private creditors were asking for too high interest rates, ruinous for farms. Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen came to the rescue in this struggle.

From charity to mutual assistance

Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen was born on March 30, 1818, in the small town of Gamm in the German province of Westphalia. He was the seventh of nine children in a poor family of a small farmer. His godfather, a priest, helped the boy get a basic education, after which Friedrich began a military career. In early 1842, after an illness, Raiffeisen left the service and began working in the administration of the city of Koblenz. Soon he became the mayor of the city of Weyerbusch.

Weyerbusch lived in poverty, farmers and artisans lacked funds. Friedrich Raiffeisen looked for and found a way to help. In 1847, Raiffeisen began to create charitable lending societies with his own money and donations from wealthy people. But Raiffeisen soon realized that such an organization could not depend solely on donations: it had to be based on mutual assistance from those for whom it was being created.

This is how the first agricultural cooperative was created. Farmers who needed help created unions and cooperatives in order to sell their products more profitably and withstand competition. Soon the first credit union of Raiffeisen cooperatives appeared - such unions provided their members with banking services, helped people pool their savings in order to issue loans to union members on reasonable terms.

From unions to a bank

In the early 1860s, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen lost his wife, two children and went blind, but continued to work. By that time, he was already called "Father Raiffeisen". In 1872, Raiffeisen united the unions into a regional cooperative credit union, and in 1877 he opened a central office. He continued to monitor the work of the organizations he had created with the help of his daughter Amalia, who became his personal secretary.

In 1886, the first Raiffeisen Bank opened in Austria, and within 10 years there were about 600 branches operating in the country.

The symbol of Raiffeisen Bank became two crossed horse heads, which are also depicted on the logo. Since ancient times, Western Europeans have attached this sign to the gables of their houses to protect families from evil and misfortune.

In 1888, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen died. By that time, 425 societies created by him already existed in Germany, and 120 in Austria. Today, almost every city or village in Austria has a square or street named after him. A bridge over the Rhine, a museum in the city of Weyerbusch and an organization he created to help people are named after him.

In the 20th century, the Raiffeisen Group emerged with its parent institution, Raiffeisen Zentralbank Oesterreich. In the 1980s, it began opening subsidiary banks in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and over time, the Raiffeisen Bank International Group became one of the leading financial groups in the region. Today, it is the largest banking group in Austria with the most extensive branch network in the country. It accounts for a quarter of the entire banking business in Austria.

In 1996, Raiffeisen Bank came to Russia. In the early 2000s, two subsidiaries appeared, Raiffeisen Leasing LLC and Raiffeisen Capital Management Company LLC. At the same time, the bank opened offices in St. Petersburg, Samara, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and Krasnodar. In 2007, Raiffeisen Bank became the largest bank with foreign capital in Russia.

By 2021, the bank's offices were opened in 90 cities in Russia.

Please add the option to change the language in the app. My system language is set to English, but I would like to use Russian in the app.

I've been a client for a long time. Raiffeisen always delivers. One word to describe this bank: security. Customer service stands out, always responsive and helpful. The app matches the bank's quality—stable, convenient, current with tech trends, clean, and user-friendly. It offers everything needed without cluttering things up.

Day three of trying to transfer money to another bank card. Each attempt leads to an "internal service error." Frustration builds. No one available to help. It’s the weekend, so I’m stuck. Even a reliable German bank can struggle with service issues like this. It’s frustrating.
