CONS

Frequent bugs causing crashes or data loss

Issues with syncing files across devices

Complicated process to enable editing mode

Lack of built-in file access for certain cloud services

Frustration with fingerprint login not working consistently

Instances of passwords disappearing without explanation

HELP

I am trying to get Password Safe to work on my phone (I tried about a year ago and couldn't figure it out so gave up). I got the psafe3 file saved into Dropbox. I downloaded Password Safe and Password Safe Sync on my phone. I opened the psafe3 file in Dropbox and my passwords came up in Password Safe. However, when I open the Password Safe app and don't open through Dropbox I can't figure it out. It wants a folder and I don't know and can't figure out how to get it to go to Dropbox. Maybe that's not how it's supposed to work? I wouldn't want to leave Dropbox logged in all the time. I'm totally confused. Are there any really good step by step instructions somewhere to show you how to do this? Help! Thanks!!

For Dropbox use, you can install the PasswdSafe Sync companion app and add your Dropbox account to the Sync app. The chosen files will then show in the main PasswdSafe app.

How do you add Dropbox or Drive to the Sync app??? I cannot get the right file filled in to point the app to Drive!!!

Jeff Harris - 2018-06-26

In the Sync app, there's a + icon in the top menu bar to add an account.

Anonymous - 2022-10-06

I have not found the right file information to put in the first field that has to be filled in!!!

Anonymous - 2017-10-27

I think I finally figured it out. It's not pretty but it works.

Anonymous - 2018-01-23

Where does sync save the file? Sync is successful but I can't find the file for the life of me.

Jeff Harris - 2018-01-24

The Sync app stores files in a private directory. They are only made accessible to the PasswdSafe app.

Anonymous - 2021-08-27

Thanks, I've been doing all kinds of searches on my phone to try and find the synced Android version of the file pwsafe.psafe3. I didn't know anything about the private directory.

I installed passwdsafe phone app and syncing app set to use one drive. Added keyfile and ps3 file and sync shows all fine. However when I try to open the passafe file I get a textual log in screen for password but no ability to access keyfile. HELP

Jeff Harris - 2018-07-06

What is a keyfile? Password Safe uses a single file, often with the .psafe3 extension. Are you using the PasswdSafe app on Android?

Anonymous - 2020-01-12

I've added my onedrive account and selected the .psafe3 file to sync, i then 'forced' it to sync rather than waiting. When I open the password safe app, I can't see the psafe3 file listed despite the sync being successful. Any ideas?

Jeff Harris - 2020-01-12

From the top-left menu when browsing for the file, have you selected your OneDrive account?

Anonymous - 2020-01-26

I switched to another android and password safe synched finelly. Then I had to format the phone for other reasons, and this time couldn't sync psswrd. While trying to do it with dropbox several times, I must have done something wrong and now I cannot enter password safe in my computer! I get a message: incorrect passkey, not a passwordsafe databae, or a corrupt database.

NOW I DONT HAVE PASSWORD SAFE AT ALL! HELP!

Jeff Harris - 2020-01-26

Dropbox may have a backup copy of your file if you look at the file history in your web browser.

Anonymous - 2020-01-29

I installed PasswordSafe Sync & was able connect to my dropbox file but when I open it says "No records"

Anonymous - 2020-01-29

I figured it out. It seems I had created an empty file so now I have 2 with same name in different folders, 1 in my Dropbox & the empty one stored in PasswordSafe's default home folder. How do I delete the empty one?

Jeff Harris - 2020-01-30

If you open the file and make it writable from the top-left menu, there should be a top-right menu file operation to delete the file.

Hope it's not a breach of forum etiquette to necro this old thread but it seemed the most appropriate place to ask this question.

I want to be able to modify the PWSafe data base on my pc and have it be automatically synced with Dropbox and vice versa, I want to be able to use my phone to modify the data base and have that synced to Drop box.

In other words if the pwsafe data base is modified on one device, I want that latest copy to be promulgated to all devices. I guess I'm thinking that Drop box would be the middle man in that scenario.

Is this set up even possible?

Jeff Harris - 2025-03-28

Yes. There is a PasswdSafe Sync companion app that will connect to your Dropbox account and sync your password file between your phone and Dropbox. You'd have to setup a Dropbox PC program to sync in Windows or whatever you use for your PC.

This app is fantastic! I've been using it for years, and it still runs smoothly on Android 10. The warning about being designed for an older version of Android doesn't concern me at all. An update from the developer to eliminate that warning would be nice. Even after my phone upgraded to Android 11, the app continues to work flawlessly. I even installed it on my Chromebook, and it runs perfectly there as well!

The most frustrating part of this app is how it closes the safe file when I shift focus on my phone. I set the File closeout time to an hour and turned off the option for closing the file on screen off, but it still happens. I have a very long safe password, and I end up entering it two or three times for just one transaction. I understand the risks involved, but the extra precautions really hinder usability. I recently deducted three stars because version 6.23.4 did not fix the file close timeout issue. It still fails when the app is not in focus!

All fixed, thanks to Jeff. This app had a tiny hiccup, but it’s been smooth sailing for years. I’d recommend it to anyone. The problem got resolved quickly with version 6.22.1, so my previous concerns don't matter anymore. It felt like a disaster earlier when the latest update crashed as soon as I entered my password. Android pointed out a bug. Glad that everything's working now! Galaxy S22 Ultra is back on track.

The app has come a long way in recent years. Speed and reliability make it really dependable. Regular updates show the programmer's dedication. The interface might feel a bit old-fashioned, but that doesn't matter much. The best part is total control over your data. No cloud unless you choose to go that route. I’ve got it on three phones, a tablet, a laptop, and a desktop. I sync my password file whenever and however I like.

Feeling quite frustrated with the recent update. It disconnects the app from my password files and doesn't show where those files are saved. The only support provided is a button to search for the now disassociated files in device storage. It seems like the decision-makers didn’t consider how annoying this would be for users. Really not impressed.

It sounds really frustrating to lose access to your safe file, especially after using the app for so long. Often, updated versions change the directory paths where files are stored. Try checking the usual spots first like the Documents or Downloads folder. Sometimes, apps create a new folder with their name in these locations. If you have a search function on your device, input the name of the safe file if you remember it. Look for hidden files too; sometimes they don't show up in standard views. If you're on Windows, check AppData. For Mac, check Library and Application Support. It can hold older versions or backups. Also, revisit the app’s help section. They might have updated info on file locations after the update. If all else fails, reach out to customer support for direct assistance. They often have the best solution for situations like this. Don't lose hope!

What a fantastic app! I've loved using it for years now. It would be amazing if you could make it compatible with Dex. I would really appreciate that, even if it means adding a paid option.

Password Safe makes managing passwords simple and safe. That Android app is a game changer for portability. Sure, browser options are around, but they come with risks. I love using this app to easily pull up my passwords while handling everything on Windows Password Safe. It feels great to have both the mobile and desktop experience. Plus, it's all free! Incredible, right? And let’s give a shoutout to that fingerprint login feature. Super convenient! 👍🏼

I've been using this app for years. It feels essential to me. Recently, Jeff fixed an issue that bothered me—the swipe sensitivity on the main file selection screen. Now, I’m even happier!
