How to send us your gas and electricity meter readings

Giving your gas or electricity meter readings is easy with OVO. The easiest way is through the OVO Energy app or online – but choose what’s most convenient for you!

Manually sending a meter reading with the OVO Energy app

If your phone doesn't have a camera you can send readings manually:

Click on Account

Choose meter readings 

Then pick to give an Electricity or Gas reading

You’ll see a handy Help option if you need support taking your reading

Enter your reading into the box using your phone keypad

Then click send – and you’re done!

If you have gas and electricity, follow these steps twice to give both readings.

Why send regular meter readings?

Submitting meter readings means we don’t need to use estimates for your bills. Instead, they’re based on exactly how much energy you’ve used.

Plus, giving more meter readings means you get a more accurate forecast of how much energy you’ll use. This is really useful for keeping your Direct Debit on track, and avoiding unexpected catch-up payments.

When’s the best time to submit my meter readings?

It’s best to send us your reading on the first day of your billing period. If you’re not sure when this is, you can find it on your bills. 

For example, if your last billing period ran from 16 Jun to 15 July, the ideal day to send your readings would be on the 16th of each month.

We’ll use the reading to check how much energy you’ve used, then take that information to help estimate the extra days. So for example, if your billing period ends on the 15th, and we get your reading on the 16th, we’ll know exactly how much energy you used for the month. And this means we won't need to estimate any of your energy usage for the month.

How to view your meter reading history

It’s easy to see your meter reading history by logging into your online account (link to post-login page) 

If you’re using the My OVO Energy app, you can find yt from the home screen:

Go to the account tab

Then click meter readings

From there, click on view reading history

    This app feels completely useless. It never shows any usage information. It keeps refusing my meter readings. Claims the last reading was six months ago, even though I submitted one just three weeks back through their website. Switching suppliers sounds tempting, but they all seem just as bad. I used to be a customer back in the SSE days, when customer service actually mattered. When OVO took over, I saw this decline coming from miles away.

    A new update came out, and it brought some bugs along. The balance on the home page doesn't match what I see on the charges and payments page. Every time I open the app, I have to log in with my email and password. Before, it remembered my sign-in after that first time, and I could just use my thumbprint. Now, it feels like I've gone back to square one.

    What a nightmare with this app! I had to update because the old one just wouldn't let me log in anymore. Finally got into the new version, and bam, a message pops up that's too wide for my screen. When I try to read it, I'm logged out instantly with a session expired notice. I try to log back in, thinking maybe it's a fluke, but no luck. Two attempts later and I'm still hitting that session expired wall. Even restarting the app doesn't help. This update sure isn't an improvement. Just frustrating!

    July 2023. Still can't see usage in pounds after uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Same problem on the website. Talked to an advisor. No timeframe for fixing this issue. If you're thinking about switching to Ovo, I wouldn't recommend it. They struggle with basic functionality. Haven't tracked usage in pounds for months. Super frustrating when trying to keep an eye on energy consumption.

    This app generally works fine. The latest update has an issue though. Changing your Direct Debit leads to a frustrating loop. On the bright side, you can still make additional payments whenever you want. That part functions as expected. Quite the surprise!

    It feels great to share meter readings whenever you want. Everything's laid out in one spot. You can easily compare the numbers. It's simple and convenient!

    The app was running smoothly until I upgraded to a Pixel 6 Pro. It started crashing every time I tried to open it. I wondered if it was compatible with my new phone. The next day, the developer replied and gave me some instructions. I followed them, and now the app works perfectly! Excellent service, thank you!

    Just discovered a fantastic app! I can check my usage, see statements, adjust my Direct Debit, and top up online. Everything was going smoothly until it suddenly stopped recognizing my fingerprints and password after working perfectly for over a year. The very next day, I emailed the team, and an IT engineer jumped on the issue right away. Now everything is back to normal and fully functional. Huge thanks! 😊
