Are you experiencing restrictions on websites and social media applications? Is your internet connection unusually slow? Use OONI Probe to investigate!🐙
OONI Probe is created by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), an initiative under The Tor Project that seeks to expose internet censorship globally.
Since its inception in 2012, OONI’s worldwide community has gathered millions of network measurements from over 200 nations, providing insight into various instances of network interference.
This application allows you to assess the accessibility of websites and messaging apps, evaluate the speed and performance of your network, and identify possible systems related to censorship and surveillance within your network.
More Info About Us
Founded in 2012, the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) is a non-profit free software project that aims to empower decentralized efforts in documenting internet censorship around the world.
To this end, we work on:
Free software for measuring internet censorship. Through our OONI Probe app, you can measure the blocking of websites, instant messaging apps, and circumvention tools, and you can measure network performance. We aim to empower the public to independently detect information controls on the internet.
Real-time analysis and open publication of censorship measurements from around the world. As soon as you run OONI Probe, your test results are automatically published as open data in real-time. OONI Explorer and the OONI API enable the public to track censorship events around the world in real-time based on openly available measurement data that can potentially serve as evidence.
Research reports documenting censorship events around the world. In collaboration with our partners, we publish research reports documenting cases of internet censorship around the world. These reports share relevant OONI measurements and aim to enable human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and lawyers to use these censorship findings as part of their work.
Mission
Our mission is to ensure a free and open internet by increasing transparency of internet censorship around the world.
We believe that everyone should have equal and open access to information. We aim to help create and defend an internet where human rights – particularly freedom of expression and access to information – are promoted and protected around the world.
We know that we can’t do this alone. This is why we have built a decentralized internet censorship observatory, powered by human rights defenders worldwide.
We create free and open source network measurement tools that anyone can use to measure internet censorship.
We openly publish measurements to provide a public archive on network interference and to increase transparency of internet censorship around the world.
All of our methodologies, tools, and measurements are entirely open, transparent, and peer-reviewed.
By increasing transparency of internet censorship, we aim to support public debate on information controls and promote social justice on the internet.
WHAT WE OFFER
🐙Gather evidence regarding internet censorship
You can determine whether specific websites and messaging apps are being blocked and how much access is restricted. The data gathered from your network measurements may act as evidence of any censorship present.
🐙Identify censorship and surveillance systems
Tests conducted using OONI Probe are structured to reveal the existence of intermediary systems that might be responsible for censorship and surveillance activities.
🐙Evaluate your network's speed and performance
Your network’s speed and performance can be assessed using OONI’s version of the Network Diagnostic Test (NDT). Additionally, the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) test can be employed to analyze video streaming quality.
🐙Transparency through open data
OONI shares network measurement data to enable external parties to validate findings, perform independent research, and explore other investigative inquiries. This practice of making data accessible helps enhance the understanding of internet censorship globally.
🐙Open-source software
All tests available through OONI Probe, including NDT and DASH implementations, utilize free and open-source software. You can discover OONI’s software projects on GitHub. If you're interested in learning about the workings of OONI Probe tests, further information is available.
