Wat Khaek or Wat Phra Sri Maha Uma Devi
Wat Phra Sri Maha Uma Devi, or Wat Khaek Silom, is a Brahmin temple located at 2 Silom Road, Silom Subdistrict, Bang Rak District, Bangkok. It was built as a place of worship for Phra Sri Maha Uma Devi, the consort of Lord Shiva. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) around 1910-1911 by a group of South Indians who had long since settled in southern Thailand.
Things to Know When Visiting the Hindu Temple
If you plan to visit the Hindu temple, one thing you should memorize is these four prohibitions. This will ensure your visit and your intentions are not wasted. These four prohibitions are as follows:
No meat of any kind is allowed inside the temple grounds. Only milk, fruit, flowers, and Indian sweets may be offered.
Menstruating women are prohibited from entering the temple grounds. In Hinduism, a menstruating woman's body is considered unclean. Entering the temple grounds is considered disrespectful to the temple and its deities. However, entering without prior knowledge is considered unintentional and is not considered illegal.
Visitors to the Hindu temple must have true devotion and should not disrespect or joke with the sacred objects within the temple grounds. In Hinduism, disrespecting the deities is considered a grave sin.
Dress appropriately. Women should avoid short skirts, shorts, sleeveless tops, and tank tops.
