Norkart Summer - Trondheim
Report from the Trondheim students
We have been lucky enough to have a summer job at Norkart in Trondheim in the summer of 2025! Throughout the summer, we have worked on developing an analysis client, and have been given great flexibility and responsibility to explore the task as we have wanted. It has been a great experience, and an exciting way to test out working life! In addition to the fact that it has also been very educational and social.
Who are we?
On the summer team this year, we have been three developers and one designer. Three of us actually had summer jobs at Norkart last year as well, so this is a workplace that is easy to enjoy!
The team has consisted of:
Harry who is studying Computer Science and is starting his fourth year.
Kristina who is studying Computer Science and is starting his final year.
Eirik who is studying Cybersecurity and Data Communication and is starting his final year.
Sunniva who is studying Industrial Design and is starting his final year.
Together we have worked closely, and had a good collaboration between system development and design. There has been a low threshold for asking for help from each other, and when we have needed it, the full-time employees at Norkart have been easily accessible. In other words, the summer has been educational, enjoyable and productive!
A typical day at work
The day usually started around 8 am with a quiet coffee chat around the long table. This was a good way to get ready for the day and it gave motivation to work focused until lunch. Before lunch we have also had daily standups.
Here, together with our good supervisor Andrine, we have planned tasks to be done in the coming days. In addition, we also review the status of the tasks we are working on. Challenges and any thoughts are discussed so that no one gets stuck.
Around 11 am our stomachs start to rumble, which means it is time for lunch. At the Trondheim office we have two canteens to choose from! The food was usually varied and tasty, BUT it was the focaccia that took the food up a notch.
Football, also known as table football, is always the highlight of the day. We enjoy it every day, and the winning instinct is at its peak for many!
After the lunch break, another concentrated work session followed, but when the clock struck 2 p.m. it was time for a short football break. This could be a ‘make or break’ for the rest of the workday. We usually finished around 4 p.m.
What have we been working on and how has it been going?
Throughout the summer, we have been working on creating a new analysis client for Norkart. The old one worked fine, but it had been a few years since it had been updated, so due to visual considerations and maintenance perspectives, it was important to create a new one. To ensure that it was user-friendly, we performed several user tests. As we achieved the same functionality as on the old client, we began to explore new functionality. It was exciting and educational to work on, and in the end we were also satisfied with the result.
On the design front, Sunniva worked in Figma to create wireframes that the developers have followed. Then we have used Norkart's own design system Toitsu, which has been a great help along the way. In the project, we have had a close dialogue between design and developers to address problems and changes. This summer, the developers have only developed in the front end using the React framework together with TypeScript in Azure Devops.
Social
When the weather has been nice here this summer (we have had two weeks of heatwaves!) we have taken a break during the working day to buy ice cream at the nearest store. Otherwise, we have also played a lot of football, which fortunately can be done regardless of the weather. After work, we have also come up with a little bit of everything, including having a quiz and going on a slackline in the park. The highlight of the summer was the summer party. Then we ate sushi and pizza at the office, and then tried our hand at the “Trondheim City Challenge”, a program where you walked around the streets of Trondheim and solved puzzles. Here, of course, the summer team came out victorious (helped by a full-time employee, thanks Ivar!).
